The, imports into the Unftcd States twelve months ending with March. 103. This Is the first time In the history of our foreign commerce In which the Imports In twelve months have exceeded $1,000,000,000. In the twelve months ending with March, 1903, the total exports were anaJnt $1.001, of Imports, giving an xces of exports during the twelve months of $413,180,271. Exports never reached a value In a single year until after 1870. On 1S80 they passed, for the first time, the line; In 1S92 they for the first time exceeded $1,000,000,000, and in the twelve months ending with March. 1903, they were and should the exports of April, May and June average as high ag those for March, they would bring the total exportation for tho" fiscal year past the $1,500,000,000 line. The International medical congress began Its sessions here today, tbp formal opening being accompanied with elaborate ceremony in which the government and the learned societien of Spain took conpplcuous part. The seEf-lons of the congress are to continue a week or ten days and promise to be of greatest Importance to the entire world of medicine and surgery. Pulmonary diseases will once more receive a large share of attention, but it Is not believed that Koeh'9 theory will be much discussed. Both English and American physicians in attendance intimate that they regard the theory as of little practical importance since prudent sanitary authorities and the public at large in every country will continue to draw the line at cattle afflicted with tuberculosis. The attendance at the present meeting of the congress exceeds that at any previous gathering of the kind In the world's history.

Those present Include eminent medical men from all parts of the civilized world. From England, every country of continental Europe, from America, South Africa and Australia the most prominent men of the profession have gathered to exchange views on the latest discoveries in the science of medicine. The United States is particularly well represented. Among the delegates from that country noted at the opening today were Surgeon-General O'Reilly of the United States army; Dr. Charles B.

Charles P. Schellberg, a watchmaker and Jeweler, reported to the Gerry society that his flfteen-year-old daugnter. Fannie, had been abducted by a gang of young men. "I am here now, a living man." said Schellberg, "but whether I will be alive tomorrow or not may be decided by the toss of a penny or the humor of the next member of the gang who meets me on the street. Almost every time I step outside of my door, I am cursed and villifted and often some burly member of the gang has grabbed me by the throat and with a curse warned me that my life was not worth the snap of my finger if I did not move out of the neighborhood.

"Your wife and your daughter can stay here, but you get out of said one of the ruffians to me recently. "For the past two months I have been sick. My child has been employed in a factory. During my illness she was sent to board with a woman and through her became acquainted with members of the gang. When I took her away from this boarding house she left me, and I have not seen her since.

If the gang can conceal her rrom the police and agents of the society, I fear that she will be lost to me." ASK YOUR DEALER.
