1st ED, 2nd mat EZ THE HARTFORD CUUKANl: many, moy ivo? fT Ex-Driver Off to Bumpy Start Chasing Dream nH rarnlatinns for the racing divi Roy Hasty Motorsports Championship Series schedule. NASCAR's 27-race Modified Championship Series is made up of Sunday and midweek shows, so the schedule doesn't conflict with a track's weekly program. And Monadnock is not a NASCAR-sanctioned track. Cirillo said that's the main reason why some drivers won't travel to Monadnock. "You've got to have the points.

We've put up good money, but money doesn't mean anything," Cirillo said. "You can't make any money racing Modifieds. It's an ego trip. Drivers want the glory and NASCAR gives you the recognition." The overall picture looks a lot better than the Modified one. Cirillo has already made Monadnock a more attractive track.

He had a "beer garden" constructed off the first turn that will house a press area on the second floor. He has expanded the pit area and he plans to work on the grandstands in the future. And he has pushed for uniform cials' calls, the management of personnel brought a season of highs and lows. "Last year was kind of up and down," Cirillo said. "We had some very good nights, and we had some special shows that didn't work." One of those special shows was a Modified race on Father's Day.

The track also had trouble drawing cars for another midweek Modified race in July, and Sunday only 19 cars showed up for the Whitcomb Spring Dash the day's only Modified event in the Northeast, and which paid $2,000 to the winner. Cirillo said there are several reasons why Monadnock has trouble attracting Modi-f ieds. The Father's Day show didn't receive adequate pre-race publicity and the midweek race suffered because of the track's location. Cirillo said he won't run any midweek events this year because there aren't any attractive dates left due to the Modified sions, like the Pro Stocks which run at Monadnock, that run at different tracks. "A lot of people say, 'Why do you want to do that, you might lose cars to other Cirillo said.

"If you can't keep the cars on your own merit and you have to twist people's arms to have them come to your track, then you're doing something wrong; That is Cirillo's theory of promoting racing. If you treat someone fairly, then you 11 get treated well in return. It may not wort all the time, but in the long run Cirillo said he'll come out ahead. "We're not one of the dominant race tracks in the area," Cirillo said. "All we want to do is give the racers and the fans a fab: shot, and in turn we'll get a fair shot.

"We know it's going to take a while. I think it took Stafford seven years to turn the corner after Jack Arute bought it. But We want to be here for another 10, 15 one I knew and he said, 'Did you know Monadnock was for I talked with my partner (Fred Pafumi) and asked him if he'd like to buy a racetrack. We looked at the track, and the next thing I knew we were agreeing on a price." In January of 1984, Cirillo and Pafumi, who had teamed up before when Pafumi supplied the money and Cirillo did the driving, began a new relationship as owners of the quarter-mile Monadnock Motor Raceway in Winchester, N.H. As is often the case, Cirillo quickly discovered that reality isn't quite as glamorous as the dream of being a promoter.

"When you're racing, you don't pay attention to the empty stands or how an official looks or acts," Cirillo said. "It's a very hard job. There are so many hidden factors that I didn't realize a promoter has to go through." The hassles of being a promoter the scheduling problems, the questioning of offi 'As a Modified driver, Larry Cirillo didn't dream of moving into "big time" professional racing. "I always dreamed of having my own ilttfeck," Cirillo said.
