Lazarus was an honorable-mention JC All-American running back twice at COD where he gained a combined total of 2276 yards and scored 31 touchdowns in 1979-80 At COD he led all rushers in California Division II football with 1158 yards and also finished first in all-purpose running with 1490 yards and in scoring with 18 TDs over 10 games in his freshman season Limited to nine games because of an injury in 1980 Lazarus was second in the state with 13 TDs and third in rushing (1118 yards) and all-purpose running The 5-foot-10-inch 180-pound speedster who prepped at Lafayette High School in Brooklyn NY then went on to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas on a football scholarship in 1981 In his junior year Lazarus was used sparingly by the Rebels He gained 63 yards on seven carries with me touchdown in 1981 Lazarus also caught seven passes for another 43 yards and averaged 228 yards on 12 kickoff returns that year A tailback who was timed at 466 in the 40 by UNLV Lazarus seemed to be coming into his own last season when he rushed 51 times for 185 yards a 36-yard per carry average and scored five TDs He led the team in those departments and snared seven receptions for another 63 Cross Boston College Pitt and Syracuse recruited Lazarus when he was in high school but they all eventually lost interest he said because they thought he was too small to play major college football
