Improving KNOXVILLE Tenn (UPI)1 -Doctors reported gradual improvement Saturday among 14 persons treated for botulism the rare food poisoning suspected of killing seven others There were similar reports of slow but steady recovery from both University Hospital here and Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville Tenn concerning the condition of those stricken after eating the same brand of smoked whitefish The patients were being treated with an expensive antitoxin to combat Type botulism a rare form of poisoning spread by a tiny organism known as Clostridium botulinum Because supply of the antitoxin was limited an F102 National Guard jet fighter plane was kept on standby here to pick up a shipment which could be sent to New York from Paris The threat of botulism became evident with the deaths of a man and his daughter here last Monday The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Tennessee Health Department have confirmed that the deaths resulted from Type botulism poisoning in whitefish Botulism was also believed to have caused the deaths of two persons in Michigan and three others in Nashville The deaths occurred earlier than those here but the cause was not known at the time Among the 14 who have been treated far the food poisoning wily one remained in critical condition Saturday Doctors at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville reported no change in the condition of Here On Fight Charge One young Kingsport man was fined $30 in City Court Saturday morning and his brother was cleared of charges arising from a fight between the two men earlier this week Audrey Rock 318 Tompkin Street was fined a total of $30 on charges of public drunkenness and fighting A charge of fighting lodged against his brother Charles Rock was dismissed following testimony Charles Rock testified he was at work in his auto repair shop on Clay Street when his brother arrived and started an argument He testified he was only defending himself against the other man when a city police
