artistry accounted for one touchdown and set up two others scored by fullback Steve Murphy Myers completed 10 of 16 passes for 209 yards Underdog Missouri surprised Northwestern favored to win the Big Ten title in 1963 by jumping to a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter Northwestern forced Missouri to punt on the opening series of plays and the ball hit a Northwestern player Tom Wyrostek recovered on the Missouri 49 with just over five minutes gone and sophomore quarterback Gary Lane hit Monroe Phelps with a 25-yard touchdown pass The conversion try by Bill Leistritz was wide But Northwestern period on a 32-yard scamper around right end by Bur- Western Tied By Tampa 14-14 TAMPA Fla (UPI)-Trailing a powerhouse Western Kentucky eleven 14-6 with less than two minutes to play underdog Tampa University utilized the passing of sophomore quarterback Val Johnson to salvage a 14-14 tie here Saturday night in the season opener for Tampa MEMPHIS (UPI) Mighty Mississippi met its match Saturday night in an ambitious Memphis State team that held the favored Rebels to a 0-0 deadlock after a magnificent goal line stand The Rebels making their 1963 debut marched to within bare inches of the Memphis State goal line in the second quarter but the tenacious Tiger line held If ever a tie could be called a victory for one team this was it The independent Tigers had been gunning for Mississippi for years Coach John Vaught starting his 17th season at Ole Miss pulled out all stops in an effort to crack the unyielding Memphis State defense His best weapon was the Perry Lee Dunn and James Weatherly sharing aerial duties The Rebels knew they were in for a battle from the start in what Vaught had called his toughest season opener in history After a see-saw battle in the opening quarter touchdown Furman 14 0 0 014 Vanderbilt 7 0 6 013 Eisaman Passes Mocs To Victory CHATTANOOGA Tenn (UPI) Quarterback Ron Eisaman passed for one touchdown and set up a field goal with a pass Saturday night to lead the University of Chattanooga to a 9-0 victory over Northwestern Louisiana Two goal line pass interceptions by Louisianai Willie Ragan in the first period almost wrecked Chattanooga Eisaman aimed at Ron Whaley from the 28 but Ragan grabbed it Chattanooga fought back a few plays later to the Louisiana 27 and Eisaman again singled out Whaley in the end zone Ragan grabbed that zone a field goal attempt but the kick fell short Mississippi resorted to almost desperation passes in the final minute but again an interception this time by wingback Bob Sher-Iag dashed Rebel hopes Mississippi followed suit by intercepting one of Vollmers tosses moments later but it was too late The tie smashed Vaughts dream of another perfect season The Rebels chalked up 10 straight victories last year including a Sugar Bowl verdict over Arkansas and ranked third in the nation They already had been picked by some to win the national championship this year Mississippi winner in 17 previous games against Memphis State was ranked a two-touchdown favorite This was the Rebels first shutout since their 14-0 loss to Louisiana State in 1958 Ragan Fires 271 To Grab Dalmalioy DALMAHOY Scotland
