PRO BASKETBALL HOCKEY Tennessean News Services NEW YORK ESPN announced yesterday that it will start a 24-hour college sports channel in March, prompting the fledgling CSTV network to accuse ESPN of copying its concept. Brian Bedol, the president of CSTV, mocked ESPN, calling it worldwide follower in in a statement. In an interview, Bedol said, think seen the great response gotten from affili- ates, advertisers and conferences and wish thought of George Bodenheimer, president, said that the new network, to be called ESPNU, had not been created to blunt CSTV, whose offerings he said he was not very familiar with, or to satisfy conferences frustrated that not enough of their games are carried on networks. ESPNU will carry approxi- mately 300 live events in its first year, including Division I football (and replays of games that have run on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC), and and basketball, plus other college sports such as wrestling, volleyball and hockey. The new network, which will not take programming away from ESPN or ESPN2.

An ESPN spokesman said it will be up to the cable companies to decide whether the new network will be placed on a digital pay tier. Bedol said that he did not believe marketplace power would slow the momentum his network has gained from distribution agreements with Time Warner Cable, Comcast and DirecTV. Bedol said that if ESPNU diligently covers the nonrevenue sports, it will interest in The new network, which will not take programming away from ESPN or ESPN2, will offer a place for excessive inventory. Games tel- evised on ESPNU essentially will be those that fit on its big sister networks. Earlier this summer, the U.S.

Justice antitrust division began an investigation into how ESPN locks up deals with conferences and allow those conferences to make other separate deals. The new channel could be a way of appeasing the Justice Department by allowing more games from each conference to be tele- vised on networks. The new channel will become a competitor of College Sports TV (CSTV), launched last year. Bedol said: Sports TV has created a successful blueprint for total coverage of college sports from the CSTV network to the Internet with CollegeSports.com to College Sports Radio, our new partnership with Sirius Satellite Radio so successful that ESPN is celebrating its 25th anniversary by following it to the ESPNset to launch all-college channel in March MEDIA.
