tive in the adoption or eucn a course as will preserve the peace and dignity of the State. The principal involved is one of important bearing on the relations between State and Federal courts, and Governor Crittenden seems to have taken a position which is not only just in itself, but tenable in law. The interference of the United States authorities of Alabama is probably based upon the belief or apprehension that the Missouri prosecutions will fall through, the bondsmen be released and the prisoner spirit himself away; but these are unwarrantable presumptions on which to invade the limits of a State Court, ignore its processes and take an untried defendant out of its hands. The decision of Judge Krekel will, therefore, be awaited with a good deal of interest, and, it is to be hoped, will contribute something toward a definite settlement of the relative jurisdiction of the State courts and the United States courts, and of the oft-repeated snd vexatious points of controversy to which the question has given rise. It may be assumed in advance of any decision, however, that the States generally will insist upon the inviolability of any process pending in their courts and here draw a fixed line between State and Federal authority.

In the dawn of an August morning in 1882, two young men crossed swords in mortal combat in a secluded 6pot not far from Heiderhoff castle on the Bhine. They had been rival suitors for tbe hand of Fraulein Marie Marx, the daughter of a wealthy gentleman who lived in the castle. Baker, of the Topeka Commonwealth. Las Vegas Optic of Dec. nth. It seems that a couple of miners who were at work excavating for the new $100,000 Court House, got up bl ight and early one morning and staked off a mining claim in the court yard. The citizens have become possessed of the fever, and the surrounding country is dotted all over with gold hunters, while the ordinary question on the street is not "How are you?" but "Has your claim been jumped, and how much can you pan out?" Those acquainted with that section olaim to have long know that gold in small quantities was there.

Unless the Las Vegas papers have miscalculated there can be no doubt that a few prospectors have found it in what seems to be payin quantities. Of oourse, until further developments, nothing definite can be said and we should want the matter thorougly investigated before placing Las Vegas on the list of mining camps. with the by laws of the company, and the and rejecud the other. "in my opinion this will bo the position of the Democracy: There will be no attempt to make a general revision of the tariff, from the fact that it is evident a Republican Senate and Executive would not approve any legislation on that question; but I think the party will announce its position in a bill reducing the tariff on artielos of necessity in common use, or rather by putting these articles on the free list. The Democrats recognize the fact that a just and equitable revision of the tariff cannot be accomplished at present, for the reasons I have mentioned, but they will declare to the country clearly what their position is. There will be no dodging and no equivocation.

These, I understand, are Mr. Morrison's views on the tariff question. When the Democrats get control of the Senate and Executive, it is, I am confident, their intention to take the yoke off the common people." "What is the plan of the Democracy for disposing of the surplus in the Treasury?" "The surplus in the Treasury at present and that which will accumulate before the revision of the tariff, should be used in the payment of bonds subject to call. When the revision of tariff does take place, in my opinion, it will have the eifeat of increasing, instead of decreasing, the revenue, so that enough money will be furnished by customs duties to run the government." "How do you figure out that result?" "Because, when the Chinese wall, which surrounds this country, ie lowered, it will let in the manufactures of other countries and the quantity of the receipts will more than compensate for the reduction of the tariff. If this result follows the reduction of the tariff, I believe it would ba ultimately wise to abolish the internal revenue system, thus getting rid of from five to six thousand office-holders.

In lieu of the present revenue system let the government authorize the States to tax the consumption of whisky and tobacco. In this way local taxation for the support of State governments would, in a great measure, be obviated-" "How do you like Mr. Carlisle as Speaker?" "I have only experienced ons disappointment in Mr. Carlisle, and that is his voice is not strong, but those who know him say that it is due to a very bad cold. He is my ideal of a fair and impartial man.

He is the greatest statesman in either branch of Congress, and he is absolutely devoid of prejudice and sectional spirit." "Speaking of the tariff," remarked Congressman Dockery, "the Democratic party should act at once. If deferred nntil the opening of the Presidential campaign, it will give an opportunity for the Republicans to misrepresent whatever action we may take." "Are there any other questions likely to come before Congress upon which the next nutional election will hinge "None, except the question of reform in a general way." But the poet's youthful beauty is reported to have been extraordinary; very tall, erect and well-knit, with fine features, dark skin and a flashing, deep-set black eye, he could not have looked the Quaker to any extent, and, in fact, we think he is more of a Quaker in habit and affeetion than anything else.
