Third Quarter Ten King 1 run (Nedney kick), 9:1 3. 7 1012 15 Loss to Memphis sends team nearer to cellar By MAURICE PATTON Staff Writer After going more than a year without suffering a regular-season series sweep, the Nashville Sounds dropped their second set in 10 days last night with an 11-2 loss to visiting Memphis. Nashville, which lost all four games of its road series at Tucson on Aug. 5-8, scored just 11 runs in its four games with Memphis while falling 11 games under .500 and to within one game of last place in the Pacific Coast League Eastern Division "It was ugly," Sounds Manager Trent Jewett said. "But it could have been really ugly.

We played some good defense, made some really nice plays. "Freddy Sanchez (at second base) made a couple of nice reaction plays, (first baseman) Carlos Rivera made a nice reaction play, (starting pitcher) Kevin Jarvis saved a single up the middle, Freddy almost made a nice basket catch going away from the infield," he said. "It could have drug on forever. It was definitely their night and their series." None of those plays took place when the game was on the line, as the Redbirds scored four runs before Nashville even came to the plate and the rout was on However, Jarvis' second-inning knockdown of So Taguchi's liner through the box prevented Memphis from adding to a 5-1 lead, and Sanchez started an inning-ending double play by snaring a Mark Nussbeck grounder with the bases loaded and the infield playing in. Rivera's diving stop of a Mike Mahoney line drive kept runners at first and second in the eighth inning.

Aside from solo home runs by Tony Alvarez and Sanchez, Nashville only had four runners in scoring position all night. "We haven't been playing good baseball the last couple of weeks," said Sanchez, who has been hampered by ankle and quadricep injuries most of the season but came within a triple of hitting for the cycle last night. "Hopefully we can get out of this funk on the road and get to playing better baseball. "For me, the best thing is that I'm playing pain-free," he said. "This last week has been the best I've felt.

The numbers will come. The best thing is just being able to play." INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS RUSHING-lndianapolis, Sauter 2-34, Carthon 4-14, Allen 5-7, Hamilton 1-7, James 2-4, Mungro 7-(minus 2). His wife, lived about a half-mile away in the other direction, so all three of us knew each other growing up," Lovelace said. "Years later we both moved to Murfreesboro where we worked together for a while." Lovelace has been the lone runner at races recently while Payne is recovering from cancer treatments. In October, Payne, 67, was diagnosed with prostate cancer. When he went in to get treatment, the doctors discovered lymphoma. Payne, who only missed a few days of work due to radiation and chemotherapy treatments, did miss several days running.

He is in the final stages of treatment, but will still be running and walking the event with his buddies. "He is great about listening to his body so we know he'll do what he feels like doing," Mark said. Mark Hardison learned plenty about running and friendship from his father, Payne, and his racing buddy, Fred Lovelace. At age 5, Mark started tagging along to races on the weekend. "It was fun and every race was different," said Mark, 34, who admits he's still tagging along years later. "There use to be a lot of 1-mile fun runs for kids back then, like the Wendy's Classic in Bowling Green, Ky." This weekend, Hardison is planning a race to honor his father, who has recently undergone cancer treatments, and Lovelace, a lifelong friend and his "Mark came to me one day and said he wanted to put on a race for the two significant guys in his life," said his mother, Evelyn. "After going to so many races for years and hearing some of the complaints he thought he could put on a really good race." Some of those complaints no doubt came from Payne or Lovelace, regulars on the racing circuit known to praise or condemn whenever needed.

The two men however stood speechless when they attended an April Fool's party with a banner announcing the race's name "The Fenton 1954 The first Sports Illustrated magazine is issued, selling for 25 cents. The cover features a game at Milwaukee's County Stadium, with the Braves' Eddie Mathews swinging, Wes Westrum catching and Augie Donatelli umpiring. 1980 Clint Galbraith drwes Niatross to a world record for a mile pace with a time of 1 :52 4-5 in a special invitation race at the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, N.Y. "Two coaches from MTSU Tommy Smith and Bruce Stewart were just starting to run and they bet me I couldn't do a 5K in less than 30 minutes." Lovelace, a retired Murfrees-boro anesthesiologist, clocked in a time of 25:30, winning the bet and picking up a new favorite sport with the two coaches. "Tommy and I ran one time in two feet of snow in blizzard-like conditions and Bruce and I have run all over the place from Hawaii to Portland, while we were on basketball trips," said Lovelace, who said both men will be running in this weekend's race at MTSU. While Lovelace will see both new and familiar faces at the Fenton Payne and Fred 5K, no doubt the most familiar will be Payne's. Pro Bowl fullback Fred Beasley could be sidelined until the San Francisco 49ers' season opener Sept. 12 against Atlanta with a high left ankle sprain. Jets cornerback Ray Mickens hurt his knee during practice and underwent an MRI exam to determine the extent of the injury. The results will be available today. New Coach Jim Mora understands the receiver's frustration over a disappointing 2003 season. "I know those guys will make an honest effort to find ways to get me the ball so I can make plays." Atlanta's new offense, which first-year coordinator Greg Knapp designed to rave reviews the last three seasons in San Francisco, should be right for Price. "I think it's going to be a great year the kind of year I expected last year is going to happen a year later," Price said. Great fanfare accompanied Price's arrival 1 7 months ago from Buffalo.

Coming off a career year with the Bills that included 94 catches, 1 ,252 yards and nine touchdowns, Price finished 64-838-3 last season. Quarterback Michael Vick's early-season injury didn't help. Adjusting for Charley: The Buccaneers and Bengals meet tonight in Tampa in a preseason game delayed two days by Hurricane Charley, which ripped through Florida. The Bucs will break camp this morning. That's two days earlier than originally planned.

But with the team scheduled to travel Thursday to Jacksonville for a game Friday night, it makes little sense to return to Disney's Wide il sjc).
