Louis 0 1 0 .000 10 13 San Francisco 0 1 0 .000 30 33 After struggling last season, junior Kwane Doster hopes to regain the role of starting running back for the Commodores. Last season was a disappointment for Doster. Instead of forgetting about the fumbles and the missed holes and the wrong cuts, he put them right in front of him He's spent part of this offseason going over film, immersing himself in his sophomore slump, forcing himself to look at all the bad. You know the embarrassing picture taken of you at that birthday party? The one you never want to see again? What Doster did was essentially stare at his for hours, summer day after summer day.

"I just sat down and watched film of myself throughout the games (from last season)," Doster said. "I compared myself to my freshman-year games. I came to the conclusion that I just got comfortable. I thought I was used to the SEC and the college game. I was just basically chilling out." After his fantastic freshman year, Doster lost his starting job to Norval McKenzie last season.

As preseason camp opened Wednesday, Doster still had a shot to regain the starting job, the present, but he doesn't mind an occasional flashback. "I look back, but as the years go by, you have to progress every year," Doster said. "My freshman year, OK, no one knew who I really was. I came out trying to prove myself. "Now everybody knows who I am.

I look back and say I need to do some of the things I did my freshman year. I look at my freshman year like I was just reacting. Now I know the game and the defenses. I see the big picture now. Everybody says I need to go back to my freshman year, but I want to have a better year than that." It's a call he's hoping rings true.

Bryan Mullen covers Vanderbilt athletics for The Tennessean. He can be reached at 726-8947 or but McKenzie appeared to be the frontrunner. It hasn't deterred Doster. "He started it this summer," said running backs coach Kenny Carter. "He did all the things you expect a player with his potential to do in order to improve himself.

He has a lot of pride and he wants to prove to himself, and to others, that the accolades he got as a freshman were justified." Doster has a lot of supporters, from coaches to family to even McKenzie. "He's got the physical abilities, but last year he kind of got down a little bit," McKenzie said. "Mentally it affected him He's a great back and I know he'll bounce back this year." To get there, Doster is being asked to go backward, something a coach rarely asks a player to do. Doster is more focused on old self." Doster's family is tough on him Tough love, it's called. They weren't trying to make him feel bad.

They just wanted to see the old Doster, the one who just a year before was named the Freshman of the Year in the Southeastern Conference. It frustrated the family to see Doster struggle through his sophomore season. And no one was more frustrated than Doster. "After the games I'd always call home and talk to my mom (Kelly)," said Doster, who rushed for 798 yards as a freshman but 386 last season. "She'll tell me if I had a good game or not.

She's been there since Little League. She understands what I'm doing. She knows when I'm having a bad day or a good day. Senior wide receiver Brandon Smith, who started all 12 games last season, was absent from practice yesterday after receiving approval from Johnson to attend a wedding. Eric Bynum, a senior reserve linebacker, was not in attendance yesterday. Bynum was taking the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test).

Bynum is a two-time SEC academic honor roll recipient. He is working on a degree in molecular and cellular biology. workout. The Commodores went pad-less for the first two days of fall camp starting Wednesday, then moved on to helmets and shoulder pads for the past two days. "When you get the pads on, nobody will have any excuses," Vanderbilt Coach Bobby Johnson said. "Nobody can say anything. We're going to let them go." The players appeared ready for full contact during yesterday's practice, which was the most physical workout of the week.

Carter held out Senior defensive end Aaron Carter, who is bat tling for a starting job, did not practice yesterday. Carter (6-3, 278) was injured at the end of practice on Friday. Trainers attended to his left knee before Carter headed to the locker room early. "We don't think it's going to be that serious," Johnson said. "You never know.

He's going to rehab a little while and probably get a brace which should (hold him out of drills) for about three or four days. But we hope he'll be back before too long." Nice play, tough landing: Lorenzo Parker, a senior corner-back, was shaken up after nearly making an interception. Parker, who started the final three games last season, came down awkwardly on his hip and was limping before being attended to by trainers. "I hope it's not a hip pointer because those things are pretty painful," Johnson said, adding that it could be a just a bruise on Parker's backside. Parker is also working with the special teams returning kickoffs.

Briefly: Offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell missed his second consecutive day of practice, but Johnson said it is not related to Caldwell's recent medical issues. Caldwell had a pre-existing heart condition and was hospitalized in February after feeling lightheaded during a coach's meeting. Big stick: Andy Abad goes 3-for-3 with two doubles. How they lost: A walk to Memphis pitcher Randy Flores and a wild pitch by Figueroa contributed to a two-run third inning, and the Sounds' bats couldn't close the gap. Game 2 at a glance Losing pitcher: Pat Mahomes (5-9). Big stick: Terry Shumpert, 2-for-3, two-run homer.

How they lost: After Shumpert's home run in the sixth gave Nashville a 4-3 lead, the Sounds bullpen allowed three runs in the top of the seventh. What they said: "It's just baseball. You can't explain it. It's just one of those things, the way it goes. All you can do is show up ready to play every day." Shumpert, following the team's fourth straight loss and 1 1th in its last 1 2 games.

20. Felipe Massa, Brazil, Sauber-Petronas, no time. Al Reyes picked up his second save of the night and his league-leading 19th of the season. "We fought back It got away from us," Jewett said. "We had the matchups we wanted.

We got beat." The recent struggles, after a season-high six-game winning streak, have pushed Nashville 10 games under .500 with 22 games remaining. "I just want us to finish at least .500," Shumpert said. "We're not a team. That's not the kind of team we are. "It's late in the season, but we've got to still come out here.

This is where they say pride comes in. Every day you show up at the park, you've got something to play for. I hope everybody else feels that way. Every day means something." Men behaving badly: Tony Alvarez's third-inning ejection in the first game for arguing a called third strike with home plate umpire Mark Winters marked the fourth time a Sounds player has been tossed this season. Relievers Willis Roberts and Mike Gonzalez were ejected in the ninth inning of an April 21 loss to visiting Albuquerque.

Two weeks later, reliever Juan Acevedo was thrown out in the 10th inning of an 11-9 loss to the Redbirds. Must be the barbecue: With his solo home run in the opening game last night, de la Rosa has four for the season. Three of them have come against Memphis on July 5 and July 7 at AutoZone Park. His fourth homer was at Greer Stadium on Aug. 1 against Edmonton.

Maurice Patton covers the Nashville Sounds for The Tennessean. He can be reached at 259-801 8 or Blow lead in seventh inning of Game 2 By MAURICE PATTON Staff Writer Nashville dropped both ends of a doubleheader with visiting Memphis last night, losing 3-1 in the opener and 6-4 in the second game. With the losses the first sweep in six doubleheaders this season the Sounds have lost four straight and 11 of their last 12. Nashville never led in the opening contest, as Mike Mahoney's leadoff double against Sounds starter Nelson Figueroa sparked a two-run third inning. After Figueroa walked Memphis starter Randy Flores, Mahoney scored on a wild pitch and Flores scored on a Bo Hart sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 game.

"Figgy's been outstanding all year," Nashville Manager Trent Jewett said after the veteran right-hander posted his Pacific Coast League-leading fourth complete game of the season in the loss. "He pitched well enough to win. You can pick that one apart, but we could have scored some runs, done some things to win. I'm not going to pick that one apart." The Sounds scored their only run on Tomas de la Rosa's solo homer in the fifth inning, but Memphis countered with a sixth-inning run on back-to-back doubles by Hart and John Gall. In the second game, Nashville rallied from a two-run deficit to take a 4-3 lead on Terry Shumpert's two-run homer in the sixth.

The Redbirds, however, scored three times in the seventh before ex-Sounds reliever CHAMP-Grand Prix of Denver Lineup After Yesterday qualifying; race Today Denver Lap length: 1.674 miles F-Ford, C-Cosworth 1 (2) Sebastien Bourdais, F-CLolaBridge-stone, 59.942 seconds, 99.516 mph. 2.
