The executive committee of the state GOP adopted a resolution over the weekend describing James Hart's support of eugenics as "abhorrent and outrageous." The resolution "urges all Republicans and Tennesseans to reject the candidacy of James Hart wholly and unequivocally." It says Hart's concept of "favored races" and other views "shock the conscience." Hart won the Republican primary last week with more than Tanner, a Democrat who has represented the northwestern Tennessee district for 15 years, in the November general election The 60-year-old Hart said before the primary that he didn't expect to beat Tanner but hoped to get his message out that "less favored races" should be discouraged from reproducing or immigrating to the United States. He also acknowledged that the Republican Party would like him to go away. Hart has run for the 8th District seat before as an independent, drawing little attention He gained more notice this time because he was the only Republican on the ballot. 80 of the vote over write-in candidate Dennis Bertrand, who got into the race when it became clear that no mainstream Republican would be on the ballot.

The National Republican Congressional Committee, in an e-mail update on various races around the country, noted the state GOP's rejection of Hart and said it supported the state party's decision Before the primary, state Republican Party Chairwoman Beth Harwell said the party wouldn't get involved in Bertrand's write-in effort because its mission does not include "managing or funding" congressional races.
