Patrick's parents, Lynn and Charles Walker, and grandparents Jane and Jim Mann are sharing Patrick's joy by instructing the child in the techniques of Source: World Features Syndicate awareness and caution for motorists and cyclists. "It puts the cyclists in a hazardous position at intersections, but one a careful cyclist can handle," Petritsch said.

"Still in most cases, the motorist could have prevented the crash by just looking right." Bicycle riding is one the most healthful, practical and fun of all sports. And, as Patrick Walker and his family can attest, it is a safe sport when done correctly. Upcoming The Tallahassee Fat Tire Festival will be held at Tom Brown Park on Jan. 14-16. Fun rides, races and prizes for the whole family.

Proceeds go to local trail building. Contact the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy at 942-2379. E-mail rtcfloridatransact.org or go to www.bikescene.comtftf Florida Department of Transportation, most juvenile bicyclist fatalities occur when the child ignores one or more of these four safety principles. Petritsch recently reviewed crash reports involving cyclists on some of Florida's busiest roads. He found that the most dangerous scenario, and one that most children typically do, is to ride against traffic on the sidewalk.

Against-traffic sidewalk riding accounted for 42 percent of crashes. Petritsch says that we need to spread the message to motorists and bicyclists, learn from our mistakes and avoid tragedy. "When riding a bike against traffic, motorists will not see you. When turning in a car, look to the right for a cyclist." Petritsch points out that there is nothing illegal or wrong about sidewalk cycling (bicycling on a roadway against traffic is illegal). Riding on a sidewalk adds additional burdens of helmet My helmet has saved my bacon on more than one occasion," says Mann.

Florida law also requires that Patrick, and all children age 16 and under, wear approved helmets while bicycling. Violators can be cited and fined. The Walkers and Manns plan to teach Patrick the principles of safe bicycling. Children should be told, trained, and reminded: Ride on the right with the flow of traffic while riding on a roadway. Stop and check for turning vehicles at every intersection, including intersections with driveways while riding on sidewalks.

Don't ride at night. Obey all stop signs and stoplights. According to Theo Petritsch, Bicycle-Pedestrian Coordinator for the I I I (j I safe cycling. Jim Mann is an experienced bicyclist and past president of the Capital City Cyclists. He stresses the need to always wear a helmet while bicycling.

Patrick will be sporting a new specialized helmet from the Great Bicycle Shop when he rides his shiny new two-wheeler. 4 'You have to be crazy to not wear a Scoreboard SPORTS TODAY TELEVISION COLLEGE FOOTBALL 4 p.m. Music City Bowl, Syracuse vs. Kentucky, ESPN 8 p.m. Holiday Bowl, Washington vs.
