State got the ball right back as Robert Lumpkin fumbled, with State's Don Merritt covering it at the 22.

Dickey hit Johnson at the 10. The Tiger end broke two tackles and faked the last man to score. Meneese kicked the point. Another pass interception by Cooper set up the first drive. Starting at their own 45, the Rattlers moved down-field on the passing of Ken Riley.

The drive bogged down at came in to kick a field goal, with Riley holding. Riley stood up and found Ken Scott at the eight-yard line for a first-and-goal. It was as close as the Rattlers would come. Lovett's field goal was wide. FAMU took the second half with a 24-yard field goal. During that drive Duhon, who had the best day of his career with 228 total yards, hit end LanLs O'Steen for 31 yards and again for 12. The Rattlers got the first break in the game as Cooper picked off a Dickey aerial and returned it to the Tiger nine-yard line. Here FAMU got a taste of what to come. After four attempts the Rattlers lost eight yards and State got the ball back.

State marched down to the FAMU 27, but Cooper picked off another Dickey pass in the end zone to halt the drive. The two teams exchanged punts and took over at the 27 as the first quarter ended 0-0. On the first play of second quarter Craig Gilliam picked off an Elroy Morand pass and returned it to the Rattler 45. The first of four clipping penalties moved State back to the 40. The Longhorns made only one first down in the second half, but Rice was repeatedly frustrated by the stout Texas defense. Rice scored its touchdown at the start of the third period. The march from the Rice 23 was sparked by Shelton's 48-yard run to the Texas two where he was knocked out of bounds. He finally carried over on a sneak. The victory gave Texas a conference record of 2-1 and kept alive the Longhorns' title hopes.

Texas is 3-3 on the season and hard-luck Rice is 1-4. Chris Gilbert, another soph, was the architect of Texas' first period score. Texas took a 42-yard punt by Chuck Latourette on its 34 and marched 66 yards in 12 plays with Gilbert carrying nine times for 54 yards. His 14 yard run at the start was the longest single play in the string. Gilbert finally carried over from the one.

(AP) -Georgia Tech's Bill Eastman raced 99 yards with an intercepted pass to pace the sixth-ranked Yellow Jackets to a 35-17 football victory over a tough Tulane Green Wave Saturday. Eastman picked off Tulane quarterback Bobby Duhon's pass just short of the goal and threaded his way along the sideline for the score which broke open the game as the Greenies were threatening a comeback. Just seconds later Tech wrecker back Giles Smith grabbed a throw by Tulane's Warren Bankston and went 40 yards for a touchdown that put the game out of reach.

Trailing 21-10 early In the fourth period, Tulane moved to the Tech seven and seemed about to put the squeeze on the nationally ranked Yellow Jack ets. But Eastman'a interception and run ended that threat and sent the 44,335 mostly partisan fans home happy. Tech lost its starting quarterback, Kim King, early in the third period, with a broken hand and fractured rib. But Larry Good took over and kept the Jackets moving although it was Tech's brilliant defense which accounted for the last two scores. This was Georgia Tech's sixth straight victory without a loss and the second defeat for the Greenies against four wins.
