an album by theennnent Argentinian sent a tape to Morel and so accurate and well done was the performance by Niedt he was invited to New York for two weeks of daily four-hour private lessons with Morel In 1972 Niedt received a full scholarship from the Spanish Ministry of Cultural Affairs He went to Spain for master classes of Segovia and Jose Tomas Then in 1975 he made a recital tour of the midwest December found him playing in Chicago's Orchestra Hall on the 1975-76 guitar recital series that included Segovia Ghiglia and Carlos Montoya His repertoire spans classical music from the Renaissance to the contemporary idiom to American popular music and the native or classical music of Spain and South America In his scant spare tune Niedt pursues such diverse interests as meteorology sports movies and reading His interest in the dance world is twofold ills enjoyment of ballet performances led to meeting a ballerina of the Kansas City Ballet Courtship led to marriage in 1975 and now Jean and Douglas Niedt lead artistic lives together Because of the ever-increasing interest in and enthusiasm for guitar music in recent years the American classical guitarist Douglas Niedt is a welcome addition to the concert stage Niedt will play a concert in Kingsport tomorrow at pm Ross Robinson auditorium as a presentation of the Kingsport Community Concert'Association Born in 1952 the artist was first excited by guitar music as a young boy on hearing recordings by Andres Segovia His father and older sister had been studying and practicing the guitar to a point where the youngster could no longer contain himself- father obliged by giving his first lessons when Douglas was seven years old From then to the present the artist has polished his playing to gem-like brilliance by virtue of long and intensive study hours on his own and privately with distinguished teachers in universities and at the Juilliard School in New York City Niedt offered solo recitals in Carnegie Hall in 1973 and 1974 The artist has won numerous first prizes and special citations In 1965 and 1966 he took first prize in American Guild of Music Competitions and in 1970 Douglas Niedt classical guitarist Chet Atkins International Guitar Competition Niedt won the $1500 first prize and international recognition in a contest that brought together 300 participants from around the world In People photographs and history Crowe 9s Book Recaptures 9 Kitty Hannabass is a whiz with a needle Nowhere is it more evident that craft can become art than in the needlepoint rendering of her old family home at Mackinac Island Michigan Mrs Hannabass designed it from a photograph and painstakingly stitched it complete with shadings Needlepoint has become a family project in the Hannabass home with her daughters Lillian and Katherine also drawing their own designs for needlepoint creations The handwork is included in an all-needlepoint exhibit arranged by the Kingsport Art Guild for the lobby display case throughout January None of the pieces are made from kits They include footstools pillows and other items made by Jean Ainslie Gayle Aspley Suzanne Burow Edell Hawley and Grace Eller photographs portraits done by professional studios or album covers are not In addition Art Guild reserves the right to eliminate wet improperly framed pictures or paintings of unsuitable character Local artists are urged to submit their best original works The show will be judged by a competent instructor of painting and drawing and will be announced next week Deadline for entries is Jan 28 the Kingsport Art Guild and the First National Bank of Sullivan County will be held at the main office of the bank Feb 6-18 With the opening Sunday Feb 6 from noon to 5 pm the show is for area artists who may enter one painting in one of three categories These are: oil including acrylic on canvas water-color including casein and acrylic used as a parent medium and drawing including pen and ink pencil charcoal and pastel Prizes are $50 for first in each category $25 for second and $15 for third In addition a $100 award is given for Best in Show Nine $10 awards of excellence will be given All winners will receive ribbons and on Sunday guests are invited to vote for the most popular painting in the show Only artists in the immediate area may enter This includes Rogersville Mt Carmel Surgoinsville Church Hill and Fall Branch Gate City Weber City and Hiltons Va on the east boundary and Blount-ville to the south Johnson City Bristol and Jonesboro are not included Entries are limited Major Metcalf is the epitome of a proper English gentleman Juanella Ryans as Miss Casewell does a fine job as a cool worldtraveling business woman Maureen Lee as Mrs Boyle has a fine voice for the role of a fussy spoiled matron Don Borders as Mr Paravicini is great in a character part with his mustache accent and hand-kissing charm Last but not least newcomer to the Guild Jim Johnson brings the entire plot together as the detective Sergeant Trotter The questions: Who murdered Mrs Lyons? Who will be murdered in late Act Who went to London? Who took the skiis? Why did Major Metcalf go to the cellar?
