Daily Tribune, Wisconsin Rapids Tuesday, May 2, 2000 11A Thompson to head GOP platform committee Appointment may that prompted dissension from GOP moderates before the 1996 convention in San Diego. Bush, the Texas governor and presumed GOP presidential nominee, agreement was bridged when abortion rights supporters were allowed to add a platform appendix. "Governor Thompson is the senior Republican governor and an articulate advocate of smaller, smarter government, greater freedom and stronger families," RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson said. "His leadership and vision will be invaluable as our party crafts a platform that reflects the hopes and ideas of Republicans and a majority of Americans." Thompson, first elected governor in 1986, said he looked forward to "serving on the com mittee to articulate our party's most innovative ideas, the principles that bind us together and our vision for the future." Two years ago, Thompson signed legislation outlawing a procedure that opponents call "partial-birth" abortion. Bush has said he would sign a similar nationwide ban if he is elected over Democrat Al Gore.

"What's clear is that the Republican Party is going to continue to play to its extreme elements that stand against a women's right to choose," said Gore spokesman Doug Hatt-away. "Bush may say he's a different kind of Republican, but obviously he clearly stands behind the party platform on this issue." Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer replied: "The governor has full faith in Tommy Thompson and his abilities to bring people together." Kevin Keane, a Thompson spokesman, said abortion is just one issue the committee will digest. "I think what they like about Governor Thompson is that he's always been someone to handle issues in a unified manner. You name the issue and the governor has been out front on it and able to bring people together on it," Keane said. The Republican Convention's Resolutions Committee, commonly known as the platform committee, drafts the statement spelling out the Republican Party's positions on an array of issues.

Its membership consists of 107 delegates, including a male and female delegate from each state and the District of Columbia, and one each from the U.S. territories. Their resulting document must be approved by a majority of the 2,066 delegates at the convention, to be held July 31 to Aug. 3 in Philadelphia. Tommy Thompson opposes abortion except for in cases of rape, incest or when the life of a mother is endangered.

The platform has no such exceptions. The 1996 dis mean GOP will remain opposed to abortion WASHINGTON (AP) -George W. Bush has put a staunch abortion foe, Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, in charge of the platform committee for the Republican National Convention. The appointment, announced Monday by the Republican National Committee, suggests party is unlikely to step away from its blanket opposi-l tion to the procedure, a stance Rozar GOP convention delegate Marshfield woman to help nominate George W.

423-2500 I one of three delegates chosen to represent the 7th Congressional District the convention, which takes place during the last week of 'July in Philadelphia. "It's an honor that I was selected," Rozar said Monday. I "We haven't had a father-son presidential' pair since our' i.second and sixth presidents (John Adams and John Adams)." Rozar will nominate Texas iGov. George W. Bush, who could follow his father George Bush (president from as the chief occupant of the Oval Office.

"It will be an exciting event," Rozar said about the convention. Also chosen as delegates were John Sybeldon Sue Shore, both from Marathon County, i The district GOP also chose three alternates who would serve in the event that the regular delegates could not serve. The alternates are Betty Barnes of Portage County, Mary Moser of Price County and former congressional candidate Dale Vannes of Lincoln County. Rozar will be one of 2,066 delegates at the convention. Besides nominating a presidential and vice presidential slate, the convention will adopt a Republican platform.

The 7th District GOP endorsed 37 platform resolutions that will be considered by the state's Republican Party at its annual convention in June. State proposals will then be considered on the national level. Gov. Tommy Thompson will chair the national platform committee. Among other things, the regional GOP opposed marriage rights for gay couples such as those recently approved in Vermont.

"Our district believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman, and no other arrangements should have full marriage rights," Rozar said. The district party also endorsed resolutions that would cut taxes and preserve the right to keep and bear arms. Rozar is the District 2 supervisor on the Wood County Board and owns Town Country Ventures, a property investment and management company. She is a former Republican candidate for the 70th District state Assembly seat and the 24th District state Senate seat, and is a vice-chair of the Designers' Section of the state Architects Joint Board.
