'FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 1977 Classes to help prepare for tests A I I I Preparation classes for the General Educational Development test will begin Monday at nine city locations. The free classes, from 9 a.m. to noon, and from 7 to 9 p.m., are offered at El Rio Learning Center, 1390 W. speedway the South Tucson Civic Center, 1625 S. 3rd and the Liberty Learning Center at Liberty Elementary School, 5101 S.

Liberty Ave. English language classes are also offered at these centers and at Palo Verde and Rincon high schools. 1 Margaret Hayes, fire suit actress, is dead settled A civil lawsuit, filed in Superior Court by Tucson School District 1 against a 17- year-old accused of setting a fire at Rita High School, has been dismissed by Judge James C. Carruth following an out-of-court settlement. Robert Ford, a student at Santa Rita, was accused of setting a fire in a gymnastics room, wrestling room, and stairwell with a cigarette he allegedly tossed onto a rubber mat last Feb. 17. Damage was about $5,900.

The exact terms 'of the settlement were not disclosed. Ronald J. Newman, Ford's lawyer, said the settlement "is not an admission of liability in the matter" by Ford. William B. Hanson, the lawyer for District not comment.

Dividend up NEW YORK (AP) Burroughs a leading producer of business equipment, raised its quarterly dividend on common stock to 20 cents a share from 17 cents, payable May 7 to holders of record April 6. MIAMI BEACH -Actress Margaret Hayes, 63, an Academy Award-nominee for her portrayal of a school teacher in the mid-1950s movie "Blackboard Jungle," has died of cancer at Mount Sinai Hospital. Miss Hayes was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role in the 1954 movie "Blackboard Jungle" and played the woman chosen for stoning in the television production of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." She was perhaps best- known for her roles in more than 300 television shows in what later came to be called the "golden era" of live TV in the 1950s.

Born Lorette Ottenheimer, she began her movie career as a leading lady to Bill Boyd's "Hopalong Cassidy" character. She was married briefly to actor Leif Erickson in 1942. In 1946 she married director Herbert Bayard Swope and moved to New York with him, giving up acting for journalism. She became assistant fashion editor for Life magazine before returning to acting in the 1950s. They had two children, Herbert Swope III and actress Tracy Brooks Swope, and were divorced three years ago.

She had lived for the last five years in Palm Beach, where she ran a boutique and hosted a daily radio talk show, "Luncheon at the Colony."
