B6G0LF THE DESERT Wednesday August 12 1992 PGA NOTES Last PGA Championship was flash of what Daly can do in time the PGA Tour and the fact that he hasn't won in 12 months is disappointing But there are plenty of long-hitting talented players In the world Daly in essence is just one of the lucky ones He made the PGA Championship field as the ninth alternate He happened to (day a' course that was perfect for a long hitter And the rest of Us game just came together that week like it had probably never come together before But even though most fans probably knew these things in their heads their hearts said something different Daly was young brash and colorful in short everything most of the top players a rent let this be the next Nick- laus the next Trevino' fans said Even-' tually they said it so much they actually started to believe iL At just 26 years old Daly is not ready to be a star on the tour Expecting him to be a big winner in the next few years is not realistic because Us game and probably Us temperament haven't matured enough yet But he has plenty of time to build a good career That's assuming fans the media and more importantly Daly himself are willing to give him the time Bohannan covers golf Take a look at a highlight video of last year's PGA Championship and you'll see pure magic An obscure pudgy blond bomber from the Ben Hogan Tour named John Daly simply did things that couldn't reasonably be expected The lasting image is this young golfer overpowering Crooked Stick Golf Club with drives well over 300 yards and well past the trouble the course offered But the highlight reel shows Daly played a complete game that week He seemed to hit every Iron to within 10 feet of the hole Then with barely a glance at the cup he would quickly nail the putt If he mined the green Daly would just chip up and nonchalantly drill home another putt He seemed to thrive on the pressure By the time he broke down for a double bogey late in the final round the outcome had been decided Just played with the newest Kenny Knox said after the round "This young man has more talent than I've ever Been John I think is the next superstar" Knox obviously was as mesmerized by Daly as the rest of us A year later with the memory of most of those glorious shots lost in time the truth shines through And the truth Is Daly is much closer to being a proverbial flash in the pan than he is to the next superstar In the last 12 months Daly has rarely played welL His name has been in the headlines but mostly for a wild off-course life As her prepares to defend his title this week he is a 40-1 kmgshoL Were the expectations for Daly reasonable? Or were fans and the media so desperate for a star with personality they tried to manufacture one out of a player who could never live up to the billing? Daly is without question a talented player He hits the ball farther than anybody and his short game and putter are underrated He can be a winner on The Associated Press DALY METHOD: Defending PGA champion John Daly watches a tee shot during a driving clinic Tuesday at Bellerive Country Club Players turn local knowledge into lead Wolf calendar NO REPEATS: Taka It from Tom Kite John Daly doesn't have much of a chance of winning a second straight PGA title at Beller-ive Country Club "This ia an entirely different golf course from last year" aaid Kite the reigning US Open champion rough is so much tougher" Unlike Crooked Stick near Indianapolis Daly's long game isn't really auited to Beller-ive which ia 7148 yards long but with 4 4 -inch rough Kite said He also said the fairways at Crooked Stick were softer and more forgiving "I care if you're hitting it 350 yards or 250 if you're in the rough you're not going to have a good week" Kite aaid Kite also said Daly atill hasn't proven himself ss more than a one -week wonder "John ia an interesting chsracter and he'a fun to follow Kite said "He'a fun for the guys on the tour to follow But you hove to win more than one golf tournament for people to keep remembering you" ALTERNATE BID: Daly won the PGA as an alternate last year and four players are bidding to follow in his footsteps Brad Fabel replaces Craig Parry who dropped out because his wife is expecting a child Brad Bryant replaces Mark McNulty who dropped out for medical reasona Dudley Hart got in because Dan Foreman who won the Buick Open last week had already qualified Brian Clear replaces Seva BaNesteroe the most prominent of the dropouts Ballesteros decided not to play last week due to a bad back and recent poor play All four of the replacements are having good years Bryant is 59th on the list with earnings of $184959 Fabel 64th with $169631 Hart 66th with $167647 and Claar 78th with $145055 NICE AND TOUGH: Curtis Strange who won consecutive US Opens in 1988 and 1989 had rave reviews for the Bellerive layout love Strange said "It's hard but it's fair The rough is tough but that's the way it's supposed to be I think you'll have a heck of a champion" ARNIE'S LAST: Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer played a practice round together on Tuesday Palmer said earlier in the week that this could be his last outing in the PGA the only major tournament he's never won FAVE RAVE: Nick Faldo Fred Couples Greg Norman and Ray Floyd are the players to beat according to oddsmakers Bookies Keith Giants and Russel Culver have made Faldo the British Open champion a 6-1 favorite followed by Couples at 7-1 Norman at 8-1 and Floyd at 9-1 Davis Love II and Payne Stewart are next at 10-1 Couples and Love are 1-2 on the PGA's money list Defending champion John Daly is a 40-1 long shot and Jack Nicklaus is 50-1 BIG BUCKS: Players will be competing for a minimum of $14 million in prize money The exact total along with the money going to the winner will be announced during a news conference today Compiled from wire reports PGA Tour member who finished fourth at last week's Buick Open shot 68 the low round at the La Quinta Hotel Mountain Course
