Menthol-less than 1 mg. BoxNess than 1 mg. A I I I By LAWRENCE LAURENT Washington POM News Service At times I am convinced that the long-run impact of public television will be that it made soap opera respectable. Other good qualities can be found, but with the continuing story of "The Forsyte and "Upstairs, Downstairs" the viewing audience was able to see that this kind of drama actually can be done with skilled actors, restrained writing and quality production. This won't change commercial daytime television, but the example is certainly available.

Commercial television with "Rich" Man, Poor Man" was a little late in discovering that the continuing as TV 'legitimized' soap opera PAGE 33 ABC still holds rating lead NEW YORK (AP) ABC has won the weekly television program ratings race once again, according to A.C. Nielsen figures for the week ending Jan. 9. Although ABC had five snows in the top 10, it also had the lowest-rated show. That was "Justice on Trial" on "ABC Close-up" Friday night.

In order, the top 10 shows were "Happy Days," with a 34.7 rating, ABC; "Laverne and Shirley," 34.4, ABC; "M-A-S-H," 29.9, CBS; "Raid on Entebbe," 28.7, NBC; "One Day at a Time," 26:5, CBS; "Green Eyes," 26.3, ABC's Monday night movie; "Welcome Back, Kotter," 25.5, ABC; "All in the Family," 25.2, CBS; "Walt Disney," 25.1, "Charley's Angels," ABC, 24.1. "What's Happening," on ABC and "60 Minutes" were nearly tied with the 10th place show but had a slightly smaller share of the audience, respectively. Riiey guest. CD CBS NEWS opposed to the unrelated, episodic, series could get aixl hold an audience. But the lesson came first from public TV, and now commercial television is full of such things as "The Money Changers," "Once an Eagle," "Executive Suite" and (beginning Jan. 23) "Roots." The first and most startling revelation from the newer form is that characters actually can grow and develop. They even learn from mistakes, a character trait that was never developed, for by the Cartwright boys on "Bonanza" or the saloon crowd in "Gunsmoke" or even by Lucille Ball in any of the variations on "I Love Lucy." Those characters stood frozen in a time lock, unchanging and certainly never learning.

The British soap operas developed differently. In "The Forsyte Saga," the characters aged, and the villain of the early episodes, attorney Saomes Forsyte, had become in the final episodes a hero. "Upstairs, Downstairs" began with a 1903 setting, and when it ends this year, 26 years will have passed. The relationships between the master and the servants will have changed, and indeed to some, the relationship will have been reversed. Characters will have aged.

A wife has died, and the husband will have married again. While this is "the final season" of a series that now is acclaimed in 40 nations, don't weep too long. The re- runs like those of "Star Trek," "Perry Mason" and "I Love Lucy" will still be around when your grandchildren sit and try to decode that strange language that was spoken in England between 1903 an 1929. They may even translate better than their grandparents. DESERT ARBORS A neighborhood that's hard to find, but worth it! You'll want to live here, 14 mile east of Harrison on Speedway.
