If a hunter owns 10 guns, there may be a logical reason why he wants another for Christmas. Let's say five of the guns are shotguns.

He needs a sixth for dove hunting. Whichever gun he takes to the field, it will be the wrong one. Before the dove shooting begins, he has a built-in excuse for missing. He took a shotgun with the wrong choke. The more guns he owns, the surer he is to take the wrong one.

Have you ever heard a hunter at the end of a dove shoot say he took the right gun? You never will. It's always the wrong gun. The more guns he owns, the more excuses for missing. It's not stylish to own just one shotgun. It's like owning an automible with one tire.

Wives often think a gun is an all-purpose utensil. Center-fire rifles shoot big bullets for game such as deer or bear. For small game like rabbits and squirrels, .22 rifles are used. They fire small bullets that don't blow up the game. Center-fire rifles come in about 50 different calibers.

You can't shoot a moose with a small-caliber deer rifle. You can't shoot woodchucks at 400 yards with the same rifle you use for deer hunting. The fact that a sportsman has never hunted moose or woodchucks has nothing to do with it. He might. If someone phones in the middle of the night and asks if he can go to North Carolina and shoot woodchucks in the morning, he'd be embarrassed to admit he didn't own a varmit rifle.

Figuring the various combinations of chokes, barrel length and gauges for shotguns, a hunter has a choice of about 50. He doesn't need that many, but if there were not such a variety what would he have to talk about? No hunter ever buys the right shotgun. He always needs just one more to have the correct combination of a lot of technical things he doesn't really understand. Just as women all rush to have their skirts cut the same length, fisherman change the types of rods they use. For years, a bamboo rod was the ultimate in fly rods.

Now they're antique pieces or used by anglers well past senility. Fiberglass was fashionable for awhile but it has been replaced by graphite. Just as women no longer wear bustles, an angler cannot be caught on a fishing stream with old-fashioned tackle. Even if he isn't catching any fish, a graphite rod will make him look as though he knows something about fishing. Fishermen seldom take the correct rod fishing.

Bass anglers carry three or four on each trip. When they lose a big bass, it's because they had the wrong rod. The average angler probably has 10 or 15 rods. There are always at least five new models that he urgently needs. Some of the corners in his home are empty.

A fox hunter never has enough dogs. He may be boarding a dozen assorted hounds but if he could get two or three more his string would be just right. No bird hunter who ever lived has had enough good pointing dogs at the same time. To ask a bird hunter to stop shopping for more dogs is like asking a E.
