WISCONSIN RAPIDS DAILY TRIBUNE Saturday, August 11, 1962 Page 7 Cowboys Outclassed Packers Wimbledon Surprise Sounds Off Billie Jean Moffitt Thinks Tennis Due for Remodeling 0 4. 1 DALLAS (APJ Paul Hornung and Bart Starr made believers out of 54,000 Texans Friday night as they led the National Football League champion Green Bay Packers to an easy 31-7 exhibition victory over the Dallas Cowboys. The Packers scored in every period as they took their second straight triumph. They defeated the College All-Stars 42-20 last week, but actually had an easier time against the Cowboys. The Packers mixed slick running with an overpowering air attack in a sharp display of championship football before the big crowd, more than twice the Dallas turnout of a year ago.

The fans and players alike sweltered in SO degree temperature. Rounding Into Shape. Halfback Hornung, rounding into shape after a late start in training because of Army duty, accounted for 13 of the Packer points. He booted an 18-yard field goal in the first period, dashed five yards for a touchdown and kicked four extra points. Rounding out the Green Bay scoring were Elijah Pitts, who crashed for a touchdown from two yards out; Boyd Dowler, who grabbed a 24-yard scoring pass from John Roach, and Ron Kramer, who bulled in from the nine with a Bart Starr pass.

The Packer aerial game picked up 233 yards, the ground attack 110. Dallas rushed for 114 yards and passed for 116. Green Bay rolled up 118 first downs, Dallas 13. Completes 11 Passes Starr completed 11 of 14 passes for 164 yards and had able help from Roach who hit on three of five for 52 yards. Hornung completed his only pass for 17 yards.

The heat limited the effectiveness of both teams, and prompted Packer Coach Vince Lombardi to offer, "It was too hot to tell anything." "Too many people still feel it's a sissy sport. Boys don't realize the type of sport it is and the skills involved until they reach college. And in order to get any place in the sport, a player must acquire an interest at an early age say 12. "Then too, amateur players are allowed only $20 a day for expenses. From that you must take care of your eating and housing as well as other miscellaneous costs.

"Personally I don't care for I usually can make it. but you can see how it would be for some especially the married players. Unfortunately the U.S. doesn't seem to want to take steps toward correcting it. "For the mos-t part, tennis is a rich man's sport.

I've been very lucky, but even so my par-ents have spent plenty of money helping me in tennis. Traveling alone, even when I first played in area tournaments, was a big expense." She takes a definite stand against professional tennis, because she feels it's hurting am "FLYING CADUCEUS" LOSES WHEEL The "Flying Caduccus" jet car is sitting at a crazy angle after skidding 1.3 miles onto an adjacent race course (Dark Line). Billie also is opposed to "open tennis" where the pros and amateurs woud play together. Yet, she doesn't have any solution for the amateur-pro problem "but then I don't think anyone has come up with an answer." While tennis is faced with these crucial decisions, it also appears the world's top players may have equally as much trouble stopping Billie Jean Moffitt.

Only other contest sends Auburn-dale to Pittsville.

Marino's, Port Bag Victories In City League Marino's Cocktail Lounge nosed out Waljohn's Tavern, 9-8, in a 10-inning battle, and the Port Merchants buried the Tri-City Dukes under a 23-5 score in City Softball League games Friday night at Mead Field. The extra-inning triumph shoved Marino's into first place in the City League race for the first time this season. Three home runs by Lundquist, Iwanski and Elsen powered the Port Merchants to victory in the leadoff game.

Winning pitcher Kuth limited the Dukes to five hits. LONGBEACH, Calif (NEA) Karen Hantze Sus-man may be the first American queen of the Wimbledon classic since 1958 but she has to share honors with an 18-year-old college coed Billie Jean Moffitt. Billie, a fun-loving'Long Beach daughter of a fire-' man, literally set Wimbledon on fire with her history-making first round upset of top-seeded Margaret Smith of Australia. She continued her sparkling play until, hampered by a leg injury, she lost to Ann Haydon of Britain the quarter-finals of the "World Series" of tennis. Billie, however, came back later to team with Mrs.

Susman to successfully defend their Wimbledon doubles tile. Six Years Ago It was only six years ago that Billie, who was holding a tennis racket for the first time, told her mother that some day she would be the woman's tennis champion of the world. She's still confident. "I'd hoped to make the top by the time I was 19," she says with a grin, "But I may have to wait. I'm still inconsistent, but with hard work and patience reach my goal." The attractive teen-ager took up tennis when she decided her playing on a women's championship softbail team at 11 was too unfeminine.

"I loved it from the first moment," she says. The days, then the years, to follow were devoted to practice of the game. Under the watchful eye of the late Coach Clyde Walker and later Alice Marble, Billie practiced every day, including eight-hour daily work-outs on most weekends when she wasn't in a tournament. Now Ranked No. 3 The long grind has taken her to the No.

3 ranking in the United Stale. theirs Want Ads in the box CAN SELL BILLIE JEAN MOFFITT "You don't have to play" She won two matches in the Wightman play last year as the American girls scored a great upset of the heavily favored British team. And, she playod a key role again this season as the U.S. kept the crown with a repeat victory. Billie doesn't sympathize with complaints of "too much pressure from fans and officials" "You don't have to play tennis.

If you play you have to expect pressure," she says. Billie believes amateur tennis is long overdue for a "remodeling, job." She's not surprised that more young people aren't taking up the sport and likewise she can understand why the top men turn professional. 1 field goal was the only score in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Packers started on the Dallas 48 and scored in seven plays, Star passing three times for a total of 30 yards. Pitts capped the drive by going over right tackle for the touchdown.

Three minutes later the Packers' Bill Forester intercepted a Don Meredith pass on the 50. Green Bay needed only four plays for another touchdown, the score coming on Roach's pass to Dowler. Houston Touchdown Eddie Lebaron's 46-yard pass to halfback Frank Clark from the Dallas 35 set up the Cowboys' TD late in the second quarter. After the Cowboys got to the one, it took them four plays to punch through the Packer defense for the touchdown. Each of the Packer second-half touchdowns came after 80-yard drives.

Starr passed 43 yards to Max McGee in the third period drive. Starr's pass to Kramer brought the points. A tremendous 85-yard punt by Sam Baker appeared to get the Cowboys out of trouble in the final pe.iod. But the Packers turned the punt into the springboard for their final touchdown. A 39-yard Starr to Dowler pass started the Packers downfield.

Starr then passed 19 yards to McGee to keep the drive rolling. It ended with Hornung going over from the five. Crt.n Bay 3 14 7 711 Dallai 0 7 0 07 CB: Hornung 10 fitld goal. CB: Pittt 2 run Hornung kick. CB: Dowler 24 pats from Roach Hornung kick.

Marshfield Rebounds in Legion Meet WISCONSIN DELLS (AP) -Gary Gonfiantini scattered five hits and Jim Burokcr drove in four runs, three of them with a bases loaded double, in leading Bcloit to a 9-0 victory over West Allis in the Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Tournament Friday night. The victory moved undefeated Bcloit into the final round of the double elimination tournament.

Earlier in the day, once-beaten Marshfield defeated Green Bay 9-4, ousting Green Bay from the tournament. Matched Tonight West Allis and Marshfield were matched in tonight's game, with the winner moving into the final round against Beioit, which can take the title with a victory in Sunday's first game. A Beioit defeat would extend the tournament to another game Sunday night. Gonfiantini posted seven strikeouts and walked four. He was backed by a 12-hit attack that included triples by Chuck Mathew-son, Jack Marlet and Bill Tracy.

Burokcr's bases-loaded double came in the eighth. Marshfield's Paul Sommers allowed eight hits in beating Green Bay. Marshfield pushed over the deciding run in the eighth on Pete Kleiner's double. The Chicago White Sox righthander, who first appeared in the majors in 1939, moved to within two giant steps of the principal milestone of his major-league career Friday night, beating the Kansas City Athletics 3-1. Next 300 Goal The victory was Jiis 298th, placing him within two of the charmed 300 circle, which has been reached only 13 times.

It gave Wynn, sometimes called Old Gus, a 6-8 record for the year and represented his third try at gaining No. 298. The New York Yankees bombed him in one outing, and he was the victim of a 1-0 no-hit performance by Boston's Bill Monbou-quette in the other. This one didn't come easy, either. Baseball's senior performer had to have help from Dean Stone in the eighth when he apparently tired.
