GYMNAST: Area athlete takes on top competition Continued from Page 1 wanted to do my entire life," said Kuczera, who started her senior year at Lake Park High School last week. "I knew I had to do it. My foot held up pretty well." Kuczera qualified for the meet in late July. At that time, Gardiner was at the U.S.

Classic in Seattle coaching Kara Kapernekas of Westchester. Gardiner realized that there weren't enough senior elite gymnasts at that meet to fill the qualifying spots for the Championships of the USA. Kuczera could advance by competing in one event at the U.S. Classic. Although she didn't expect to compete at all until December, Kuczera placed 21st on uneven parallel bars.

"I was a little nervous on the plane ride there because I didn't know what to expect," Kuczera said. "Todd just told me to be ready to compete; I couldn't use all pfmy skills, but it was clean and I hit it," She was limited to conditioning and working bars by two stress fractures in her right foot. The injury, which took place two months ago, was caused when she landed her beam dismount improperly. Kuczera had missed about two months of preparation on the other events. Before the injury, Gardiner had decided she was ready to move up from the senior elite national level to compete with Olympic hopefuls at the senior elite international level.

Kuczera has trained at IGI for four years. She arrived in 1994 from Voorhees, N.J., as a Level 10 gymnast. Kuczera was the New Jersey state champion and made her first trip to nationals as a 13-year-old. She finished 14th in all-around at the Junior Olympic (Level 10) nationals in 1994 and won the meet in 1995. Kuczera was first on balance beam, second in vaulting and third in all-around in her first senior elite nationals last year.

"I was surprised," Kuczera said, "but that's when I knew I was ready to go elite." In addition to earning a spot on the national team in 1995 and 1996, she has competed internationally each of the last three years. She also qualified for instruction at the Olympic Training Center in Col- orado Springs, Colo. "She was so good at Level 10," Gardiner "Because of her- Level 10 experience, I felt pretty confident that she could compete at the elite level even though a lot of great gymnasts get nervous when they're standing next to someone like Shannon Miller." Kuczera's tendency to rise to the level of competition and her international experience helped in Denver. Competing all-around, she led off with an 8.05 on bars and hit her first beam routine of the year for an 8.15. She finished the Aug.

14 preliminaries by nailing her laid-out double back somersault in floor exercise (8,35) and a strong vault (8.775). flf the scores seem low, it is because a stricter international code of points went into effect after the 1996 Olympics.) Her prelim scores qualified Kuczera for the all-around finals. She again put together four solid routines, scoring 7.95 on beam, 8.5 on floor and 8.725 in vaulting, and she finished her competitive season with her best bars routine for an 8.35. She scored 66.85 points in all- around (8.356 average). "My goal was just to make it through nationals," Kuczera said.

"With the injury, I knew it would be a little harder to make the national team. The other girls had been training for months and I was training for two weeks." Gardiner said working out with Kapernekas and Stephanie Kim of "Darien helped Kuczera'develop rapidly. Kapernekas finished 25th at the junior elite international finals during the same weekend in Denver. "Tbdd's a great coach," Kuczera said. "He teaches us to push each other rather than having him push us.

Kara has been here as long as I have and we help each other a lot." Kuczera took a short break following the national meet before setting to work on adding new skills. Her next competition will be in December. The next national team qualifier will be the American Classic in March. "I made a lot of new friends on the national team," Kuczera said. "That was one thing I really enjoyed.

I got to talk to Vanessa Atler quite a little bit. And there were a lot of people I knew who I got to know a little better." She hopes to select a college during the off-season. Kuczera plans to visit Georgia, Michigan, Arizona State, Ohio State and Oregon State. She is leaning toward Michigan, where she would reunite with former IGI teammates Beth Amelkovich of Lombard and Katie Nellans of Mundelein. "I want to go to NCAA nationals," said Kuczera, who plans to become a physical therapist.

"I like Michigan's location. It's a great school and Michigan did real well at nationals last year (fourth place). Beth and Katie have both been role for me." If Kuczera secures a spot on the national team, it could change her college outlook. "She had to do routines that were watered down and couldn't really show what she could do," Gardiner said. "And she still took 28th, The door is really open.

If she does really well, the top three or four, her college coach, might hold her scholarship until next year." OBITUARIES Edmund J.Piekarski Funeral services for Edmund J.
