Funeral services for Mr. Arrington were conducted October 9 from First Baptist Church-of Collins, where Mr. Arrington was a lifelong member.

A native of Covington County, Mr. Arrington was born September 21, 1941, the son of the late James D. Arrington Sr. and the late Alyne Rogers Arrington. He graduated from Mississippi College with a bahelor's degree in education.

He also attended Millsaps College, where' he played basketball and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He received the master's degree in education from the University of Southern Mississippi. He had been publisher and editor of The News-Commercial week-lv newsnaner in Collins since 1988, when he succeeded his mother son, Billy Leach of Jackson; a daughter, Vivian Stevens of Brandon; brother, Troyce Patrick of Puckett; sisters, Ollie Lewis of Mendenhall and Eudene Duncan of Mobile, and grandchildren, Vickie Fisher, Tammy Smith, Damon Brian Stevens, Jeff Beach and Paige Stevens. Mrs. Leach was preceded in death by her husband, William N.

Leach, and a brother, Hoye Patrick. David Wayne Peden David Wayne Peden, 39, a laborer, died at his Magee residence on October 5, 2001. He attended the Methodist Church. Services were conducted from the First United Methodist Church in Magee on October 7, with burial following in the Magee City Cemetery. Mr.

Peden is survived by a son, Timothy Aaron Peden Harvey of Magee; daughters, Jamie Nicole Counts, Hollie Nicole Peden and Katherine Haley Peden, all of Magee; his parents, James and Janet Coats Peden of Magee; a brother, Michael Peden of Magee; former wife, Cyndi Peden; and one grandchild, Natalie Counts of Magee. He was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Peden, and a brother, Don Spellman. Elvie Sullivan Pleasant Elvie Sullivan Pleasant, 97, a housewife, of Mendenhall died of heart failure September 16, 2001 at Magee General Hospital. Funeral services were held September 18 at Coat Baptist; Church, where Mrs. Pleasant was a member.

Burial followed in Sharon Presbyterian Cemetery in Magee. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lois Sullivan Smith of Magee and Mrs. Verle Sullivan Plotkin of Jackson; brothers, Van Sullivan, A.D. Sullivan and Barney Sullivan, all of Magee, and Hilton Sullivan of Mt.

Olive; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Ola Sullivan, one brother, three sisters and one grandson. Mrs. Arrington was awarded the Community Service Award for Media in 1999 by the Shadrack Rogers Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and was named Outstanding Young Woman of Covington County in 1981.

In 1986 she received recognition from Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. She was a high school tennis coach and an avid fan of Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair, a Covington County native. Survivors include a James D. (Jay) Arrington III of Collins; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Mr. and Mrs.

Jimmy (Analyn) Goff of Collins and Mr. and Mrs. Albert S. (Jeannie) Gooch, of Hendersonville, N.C.; two nieves, Anna Goff of Hattiesburg and Alyson Gooch Thorn of Hendersonville, N. and two nephews, James Arrington Goff of Jackson and Albert S.

(Sid) Gooch III of Asheville, N.C. She was preceded in death by her father and her brother, Daniel James (Jim) Miley. Martha Alma Cockrell Martha Alma Cockrell, 77, housewife, of Magee died at Magee General Hospital on October 5, 2001.

Funeral services were held October 7 at Mims Mitchell Chapel in Magee with burial in the cemetery of her home church, Corinth Baptist. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Burnise Malley of Florence; brothers, W. J. Mc Williams and Charlie Lee Mc Williams, both of Magee; sisters, Hazel Hankins of Magee and Byra Shearer of Cathage, and one grandson, David Michael' Malley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Oyd Cockrell, and her parents, Mr.

Griffith Polly M. Griffith, 95, a retired teacher, died at her residence at Willow Creek Nursing Home in Byram on October 1, 2001. Services for Mrs. Griffith were held October 4 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Simpson County, where she was a member, with burial in the church cemetery.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Rhoda and Bobby Williams of Byram, and Barbara and Marvin G. Baker of Brandon; daughter-in-law, Betty Griffith of Brandon; brother, Lawrence Wigington of Mt. Olive; sister, Ernie Lee Sullivan of Prentiss; six grandchildren, Mark Griffith of Littleton, John H. Williams of Destrahan, Jeffery C. Williams of Ridgeland, Melodi G.

Griffith of Dallas, Deirdre B. Rogers of Youngsville, N.C, and Jennifer M.Baker of Memphis, and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Griffith was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Griffith; a daughter, Cecilia Mai Griffith; and a son, Johnny C. Griffith.

Verneda Leach Verneda Leach, 91, housewife, died at her Crossgates Manor Nursing Home residence in Brandon on October 2, 2001. Funeral services were held October 4 at her home church, Rock Hill Baptist, with interment in Ross Cemetery in Rankin County. Family members described Mrs. Leach, who was called "Mama Leach" as a home maker and avid gardner who loved to share flowp ers and plants from her garden with everyone. Survivors include herj J.

In the early 1990's, he volunteered as boys basketball coach at Prentiss Christian Academy.
