Ruble, M.D. Dear Dr. Ruble: Your column turned up In the bottom of a box my daughter used to send me some tulip bulbs. She used her local newspaper for wrapping. Just thought you'd like to know how I ran across your article on gout.

Anyway, she is now saving the column regularly and ships it to me witout tulip bulbs, and I enjoy it. My question is about gout and wine. Is it true that wine is bad for a gout patient? What about diet in general? I'll look for your answer In the next mail from my daughter. Mrs. G.

You would be surprised to know how many packing box fans I have. For some reason the temptation to read newspapers that are used to pack objects is irresistable. As to your question, wines are not advisable, especially champagne and the heavy wines, However, since newer medicines have been developed to treat most forms of gout effectively, diet is no longer considered a great factor. Foods such as organ meats, or wines for that matter, can be used in sensible amounts by most gout patients. Diet can be part of a program to reduce the amount of uric acid the body must handle.

Moderate wine consumption Is not bad, but alcohol abuse can cause an attack. Bet you have some lovely tulips. Dear Dr. Ruble: Please tell me about heart palpitations. My family physician and heart doctor don't tell me anything except to go home and lie down.

I have had three EKGs. one while having a palpitation. They tell me they see people with the same thing every day and that it will not kill me. Is there a cure for this? I have kept diarires of my diet and physical activities for two years, but can find no pattern for the attacks. J.M.

I wish I had a nickel for every heart "palpltator" who usually write me in almost the same words you use. You and I could retire. Sooner or later most of us will have some heart symptom a bit of a flutter now and again. They are harmless quirks usually related to some outside factor anxiety or a stimulant such as coffee or cola. You did the correct thing.

You reported to your doctor and were checked by him for any possible serious heart ailment as well as by a heart specialist. What more do you want? The tests showed you are in good health. With all the modern medical tools available today even In an ordinary doctor's office, hints of any serious heart problem can be readily picked up. My booklet, "How to Take Care of Your Heart," may provide some informative reading for those times when you are otherwise lying down worrying about your ticker.
