McCammon new Flyers9 coach Archery Sports transactions Dickey doing okay; Pack cuts Giordana EBALL ANTI.FR archers summer PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Bob McCammon, who coached the Maine Mariners to an American Hockey League championship in the team's first year of existence, was appointed today as new head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, the Associated Press learned. McCammon succeeds Fred Shero, who resigned in May after the Flyers were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoff semifinals by the Boston Bruins. McCammon is recognized as a tough disciplinarian, the type of coach Flyers owner Ed Snider and general manager Keith Allen have said is needed to lead the Flyers to another Stanley Cup championship. Shero' coached the Flyers seven years and won two Cups. He said when he resigned that he could no longer motivate the Philadelphia team.

The Flyers at first refused to accept Shero' resignation, but later gave the veteran coach his release so he could become general manager-coach of the New York Rangers. The Flyers received the Rangers' firstround choice in the NHL's June- player draft in return for the rights to Shero, who had one year remaining on a five-year contract. Wis. (AP) A plate was removed Wednesday from Green Bay Packer quarterback Lynn Dickey's left leg, which was broken in game last November, and Dickey was reported to be "doing well" by the National Football League team's orthopedic consulant. Dr. James Nellen said the plate was removed primarily because the quarterback was experiencing some irritation from it.

The cast had been removed in March "It will not affect the weightbearing (capability) or strength of the leg," Nellen said of the operation. Meanwhile, the Packers announced they had released two other signal callers. They are Brian Dowling, signed as a free agent last winter after Dickey was hurt, and Reed Giordana, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics record setting passer from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point signed this spring as a free agent PAGODA Bingo.
