Tom Nugent, Maryland coach, congratulated Jim Hickey, North Carolina coach, in the center of the field. "Jim," Nugent said, "you've just beaten the best football team in America." Figure this one: Gene Roberts, the FSU fullback, didn't gain weight he lost while getting over that knee injury. Slipped from just over 200 to just under 190. Each day half the squad rides the other half piggy-back up a hill by the practice field. ABC television people were told beforehand there would be a 5-mmute delay before they could get to Alabama-Tennessee dressing rooms after the game. "Why" one commentator asked. "Perhaps to notify the next of kin," a wise guy replied This. is a true story.

A Tallahassee attorney was sitting with a friend before the Florida kickoff against Bethune-Cookman. The attorney sought a friendly He was offered Bethune-Cookman and 75 points. He took it. Final score: 76, Bethune-Cookman 0. Jones Wasn't Having Any At a Monday meeting of a Nashville football group, Coach Art Gueppe of Vanderbilt was asked if he "minded" taking his team to Oxford for yesterday's date with Ole Miss.

"No, I don't mind," said Gueppe, "I'm not playing." This one I can't verify, but the story's circulating that it happened this in a game in which a local high school team was taking a big beating. The losing coach called to his quarterback on the field to give the ball to well, let's call him Jones. But Jones didn't carry that play, the next, or the next. The coach yanked his quarterback who offered this explanation: "Jones says he don't want the ball!" Up in New Haven, they've organized a skin diving country club Paul Dietzel, the LSU coach, after a comeback 24-14 victory over Kentucky: No, we didn't underrate their end Tom Hutchinson. We just couldn't keep up with him.

I don't think I ever saw a 14-point lead disappear so fast. It went like an ice cube in the desert. James Earl Wright, whom Memphis State and some other folks feel is the country's best college quarterback, came to the Tigers as a 145-pound freshman, built himself up to 180-plus. Alabama's Bear Bryant says: "That boy's too good to be coached by anybody but me." Wright beat Mississippi Southern with a great performance, then turned over the reins the following week to Charles Alexander, the one-time FSU freshman. While Wright rested, Alexander led a 35-0 charge against Abilene Christian.

They Couldn't Swing Tom Nugent wanted badly to bring his Maryland team to Tallahassee for a 64 opener jwth FSU. The Seminoles couldn't make room on the only open" date Nugent had. Vaughn Mancha's trying to bolster the home schedule for '62 but chances aren't good for a top attraction to balance the slate here. Jess Neely, the Rice coach, recollecting that 24-0 road loss i dealt by Georgia Tech: "Atlanta is a nice place to visit; but 1 wouldn't want to live there." When FSU's Roy Bickford Wocked that Florida punt, it was the first fizzle for Don Ring- gold since junior high nine years ago.

Against Vandy a week ago Ringgold got off a punt despite the fact the snap sailed over his bead and he had to race to retrieve it. Frank Broyles, the Arkansas coach, says if a present trend In college football continues he will from now on search for the best runner on his freshmen team and make a quarterback out of him-and to heck with his other talents! A local policeman swears it happened. He caught a little old lady crossing the street against one of those "Don't Walk" signs, and asked her what in the world she was thinking of. "Oh," he sez she said, I thought that was put up as an advertisement for the bus company!" Paremore Guides 60-0 Win Special To The Democrat ORANGEBURG, S. Repeated FSU efforts were stymied by fumbles or key penalties. Price's passing kept the Gob-! of 11 for 74 yards.

The 167-pound-er from Miami Edison also ran a dozen times, for 60 yards top work of the afternoon. FSU's Feely hit on eight of 14 for 80 yards, But Tech threw something of a crimp in FSU's running game when it stacked its detenses to take care of 202-pound lefthalf Keith Kinderman. Kinderman, who last week ran for 142 yards, got 52 today, on 12 runs. It was a bruising FSU had end Y. C.

McNeese and tackle Tom Slicker, sidelined early on injuries. "We beat a real good football team," said Tech's Claiborne, "We won on guts and determinationand a terrific defensive effort. We really got after 'em on defense." "Tech wanted to play more than we did," said FSU Coach Bill Peterson, "Mistakes took us out of the game. I don't think our men were convinced they would hit that hard until it was too late. Claiborne did a great job preparing for us.

Tech deserved to win. "But the pass they scored on wouldn't happen again in a long time." Virginia Tech had a onifk chance soon after Eddie Feely returned the opening kickoff 20 yards to FSU's 37. On the Seminoles second play a Feely hand-off misfired, and Art Pruett recovered the fumble for the Virginians at the FSU 40. W'arren Price shot a iumrj pass eight yaras to Dick Goode. lwo plays later.

Price raced around end 15 yards to FSU's 14. Price's third-down pass from the 11 overshot Leon Tomblin ir. the end zone, and Aster Size-more entered to boot a field goal from the 18. Tech led, 3-0, witih 4:11 gone. It was a puuting stalemate the rest of the quarter, with the Seminoles shackled by penalties, a fumble that they recovered, and an aroused bunch of Gobblers.

Thirty seconds remained in the quarter when FSU got its first first down. A 16-yard sprint by Feely put the Tribe at midfield, but a motion penality blunted this thrust. Shortly the Seminoles had an other crack, from the Tech 49 after the Gobblers, backed to their 11 on a clipping penalty, punted out of the hole. FSU took a 4th-and-one gamble at the 40, and Kinderman smashed to the 38. But the Gobblers held at the 34.

Calhoun angled a beaut out on the three. Two plays lost a yard. Strock punted out nicely, and Calhoun ran the 49-yard boot back to Tech's 40. Came 4th-and-3 at Tech's 33, and FSU faked a punt, with Gene Roberts taking the snap and bulling wide to the 26. Then it was the 4th-and-3 at the 19.

John Harlee went in, lined up for a field-goal attempt, it was a fake all the way. Feely, down to hold the ball, jumped up, turned and fired a pass to McConaughhay, all alone in the end zone. Harlee capped the touchdown with a punt and it was 7-3 with 3:35 left in the half. The Seminoles were on the attack at midfield when intermission came. It was the first TD pass Feely has thrown in his FSU time, also the first via air for the Seminoles this season.

Halfway statistics showed FSU with a 6-2 edge in first downs, a yardage lead of 125 to 60. Virginia Tech was posed at its 43 following a piling-on penalty shortly after the second-half kick. The Seminoles called a stop there, but soon the Gobblers were storming back on Price passes. Price hit Goode with an 11-yard jump pass, then threw to Tomblin for eight. Buddy Perry slashed off the left side for 11 yards to FSU's 34, then dug for three more.

The Renegades relieved the Chiefs on defense, and promptly lighting struck. ball bounced off two FSU de fenders and was grabbed by half back Weihe and he had clear sail ing- to a 6-points climax of the freak play. Sizemore added the point and Tech led, 10-7. Feely took a handoff from Gene Roberts and they collaborated for a return of the kickoff to FSU' 37. There followed a drive to frustration.

A foul penalty put the Tribe at Tech's 48. Two plays, and Feely raced 13 to. the 33. Two more formations lost two, and Feely passed to Jack Forehand at the 17. Roberts fumbled and Tech'i Herb Bowling recovered at the 14.

Back to its seven by a penalty, Tech punted. Strock's boot rolled to the FSU 40. MOUNT'S DRIVE With Jack Forehand running four times for 15 yards and Kinderman carrying three for 17, FSU drove to a first down in the Tech 31. But at the 27 FSU drew a 15-yard penalty for an illegal shift and couldn't recover. Calhoun's punt rolled over the goal line.

On a 15-yard burst by Tom Hawkins the Gobblers soon were posed at FSU's 48. On third down, Price hit Goode with another jump at the 33. FSU held for downs, took over at its 24 with 6:35 remaining. A fumble lost two yards. Feely couldn't get a pass away, lost another.

A pass fell incomplete. Calhoun punted, and Tech was back at its 22 following after a foul penalty. With 2:45 to go the Seminoles got the ball at their 40 following a punt. Feely passed to Jim Daniel at the 50. A long one to Forehand was just beyond the halfback's outstretched hands at the 10.

Forehand caught a short one at the 43. It was the 4th-and-three now. Forehand ran wide on a reverse, was a yard short of a first down. Tech took over with the clock showing 1:40. Tech drew three penalties for stalling.

Finally FSU got the ball a last time at its 40 with 31 seconds to go. Feely, trying to throw, was hit for minus three by Bloice Davison. Ed Trancygier entered for a final play. He threw it long, and Buddy Weihe intercepted, ran the ball back to midfield as the horn blew. The road jinx stands.

Florida, talcing its first SEC loss, has three victories, two defeats and a tie. Halfback Wilkins capped an 88-yard scoring drive by racing 33 yards for a touchdown in the second period. Quarterback Robinson, a defensive specialist, intercepted a Florida pitchout minutes later and sprinted 25 yards for another. The Tigers covered 86 yards after intermission in only five plays for a third score on the passing of quarterback Lynn Amedee, who pitched 16 yards to end Danny Neumann for the touchdown.

A 33-yard field goal by halfback Wendell Harris completed the LSU runaway. Harris also kicked two conversions to run his season point total to ,38. Helped by two pass interference calls, Florida moved to the LSU 5 in the waning minutes, but Tiger fullback Steve Ward intercepted a pass to kill the threat Florida staked its best drive, an 82-yard push, in the first period, but LSU stopped the Gators at the 12. Then Jack Gates and Dennis Gaubatz blocked a field goal attempt by Billy Cash. Those were the only Florida threats as LSU's newly found attack continued to pile up points 89 in the past three games.

The "go" team, LSU attack specialists, tallied two of the three touchdowns, and the defense-minded Chinese Bandits got the third. Harris missed his first field goal of the season after kicking three when he was short from the Florida 28. The big halfback also missed in his effort to kick a 14th consecutive conversion when LSU drew a lS-yard penalty for illegal substitution after the second touchdown. AGGRESSIVE LINE LSU's aggressive line, one of the nation's most effective, put so much pressure on Florida quarterbacks that they had little room to maneuver for passing or for pitchouts. Coach Ray Graves tried three pilots, Bobby Dodd injured Larry Libertore and slender Tom Batten, but they had little success against either the No.

1 LSU line or the Chinese Bandit fore-fall. Fullback Don Goodman, a 203-pounder who runs like a halfback, topped the Florida rushers with 34 yards on 10 carries. The Gators managed only 53 yards on the ground, and their total offense was only 122 yards. LSU was taxed 184 yards in penalties, a new SEC record. The old mark was 182 yards assessed against Mississippi in a 1954 game with Kentucky.

LSU next meets Ole Miss, the nation's No. 2 team, at Baton Rouge. Dodd and Libertore connected on only two passes. Batten, making his first appearance of the season hit 4 of 9 for 43 yards. Linebackers Earl Gros and Buddy, Hamic were defensive standouts for LSU, along with end Gates, guard Roy Winston and tackle Bob Richards.

Hunt Directs Auburn's Win Over Clemson AUBURN, Ala. (AP)-Quarter-back Bobby Hunt's brilliant passing gave Auburn a promised new offensive weapon Saturday and cleared the way for a 24-14 gridiron victory over a Clemson team that refused to budge on the ground. The 180-pound senior from La-nett, tried only 3 passes but completed all of them for long gains which put the Auburn Plainsmen within sioring range.

Clemson came to Auburn with a dreaded passing attack, but it couldn't overcome a stubborn home-team defense. Auburn defenders time and again batted the ball out of the hands of intended receivers or made passing star Joe Anderson miil. Auburn had to come from behind to win. Clemson, taking advantage of its weight, took the opening kickoff and rolled 80 yards in 21 plays for the first score, with halfback Wendell Black go: ing over from the 2. The victory was the Rattler's fifth straight.
