NOVEMBER 24, 1982 MADISON EAGLE FLORHAM PARK EAGLE COMMUNITY NEWS CHATH AM COL RIER Dodgers tie for state soccer crown With a 1-1 tie against West Deptford on Friday night Madison won the Group II State Championship and completed the crown" of soccer for 1982 The Dodgers won Moms County and Northern Hills Conference championships to go with their state crown. The game, in which both teams were declared state champions because of the tie. was played at Wall High School near Pt. Pleasant before a crowd estimated at 1,300 At least 1,000 of those fans were in the Madison stands having arrived by bus and by car pool Members of the Marching Band and the cheerleaders were also on hand and added their unique contributions to the excitement. Madison, ranked 13th in the state going into the game, opened the scoring about midway through the first period Chuck Lindner took an indirect kick just outside the 18-yard line and pushed it through the right side where Chris Harris turned on the ball and fired his 40th goal of the season into the net The Dodgers dominated play through the second period but let up just a little in the third quarter when West Deptford got its goal to tie the game The contest, which was very- physical throughout, got away from the referees in the fourth quarter The officials ejected three players from the game during the final period, two from Madison Hams and David Blank.

Commenting in the press after the game. West Deptford coach Steve Basca said. a shame the officials let the game get out of hand. It got to the point where it was a battle of who would be left More than a dozen yellow cards were issued for rough play, most of them in the final quarter While play was indeed intense, few of the fouls seemed severe enough to require the referees to issue cards. The Dodgers, however, rose to the occasion in magnificent fashion.

Although disheartened by the loss of two of their teammates, and playing nine against ten for half of the fourth period and both overtime periods, the team more than held its own. In the final five-minute overtime the Dodgers made repeated thrusts upheld at the West Deptford defense. While many in the stands were yelling Defense" urging the team to play for the tie since they were playing with two men short, the team went on the attack, completely taking the play away from their opponent Chuck Lindner's shot on goal in the closing seconds of the overtime taken while he was fully in the air and horizontal to the ground just missed the right post. That the team chose to attack and try to score the winning goal rather than play it safe, is a comment on their courage and determination and the confidence which their coach Mike Reynolds had in his superb Dodger team. Those who saw the final five minutes of the game will never see high school soccer played at any higher level of intensity or skill than the nine Madison players showed nght up to the final buzzer The team's final record for the season of 22 wins.
