Chaffin said familiarity among coaches makes it easier to facilitate transfers. "Everybody knows somebody, so it's pretty rare when somebody doesn't get released from a scholarship," he said.

"The coaches know each other, get along and are friends. That helps." Chaffin agreed with Mouat that finding the right place for athletes is the most important issue. "You want a better fit for them," he said. "If a kid really doesn't want to be at your program, you don't want them around. You want what's best for them." He said the North and South Dakota leagues aren't as permissive as the Frontier. Argo coach Steve Silsby, who spent several years in junior colleges before coming to UGF, doesn't see anything wrong with the liberal transfer policy. "Look around this gym," he said Tuesday afternoon. "It don't see any guy in here who's gonna be a pro. The big thing is getting a chance to play college basketball somewhere and getting your education.

To me, if a kid wants to leave here and go else where in the conference, I'd let him go. Why make it a bigger issue than it has to be be?" That's the way Brothers sees it, too. The former Havre High star is averaging 11.1 points and 4.1 points for the Argos, after playing his first three years at Northern under coach Shawn Huse. He started his last two years for Huse, but didn't feel he would be playing as big a role this season. So he contacted Silsby, who was glad to take a 6-3 athlete who could help his struggling program.

"I'm happy be here," said Brothers. "I'm having more fun. It doesn't feel so much like a job, although we still work hard to get better. "I'm not sure how the rest of NAIA works," Brothers added. "I'm glad it's like this, because we're not playing NCAA Division I.

A ton of people have done the same thing." Brothers also is on track to graduate in four years although he plans to get his diploma from MSU-Northern, not the school he's attending now. "I'm actually going to graduate from Northern," he said. "1 have to finish two more classes, either summer or online, to get my degree from Northern."
