What's your rate? Naperville and Aurora students will probably spend some time this fall walking briskly and checking the time. They won't be hurrying to get through the crowded halls in time for class, though. They'll be making the most of their gym class workouts. Students in Indian Prairie Unit District 204 will begin using heart rate monitors in gym class this year as the district moves toward a fitness-oriented physical education program. With the heart monitors in place, students can find out what exercises get their hearts pumping and how hard they need to work to get the benefits.

Hopefully, they'll find exercises they like and will stick with them even after class is over, teachers said. 204 decided to use the heart monitors after watching how neighboring Naperville Unit District 203 is transforming its physical education classes and helping Naperville started using heart monitors several years ago and introduced them into the high school curriculum last year. In the first semester using the monitors, four high school students found they had heart conditions after noticing that their heart rates seemed unreasonably high for the activities they were doing. The students received treatments ranging from medicine to surgery, and all have returned to regular activities. District 203 teachers also realized that their students have differing fitness levels and are adjusting how they grade students.

For example, an athlete may be able to run a couple of miles in 20 minutes but a couch potato may only be able to walk a mile in that time. As long as they're both working their hearts at safe, productive levels, they're both likely to earn A's. District 204 teachers spent Monday learning how to work the Polar- brand monitors. The monitors read a student's heart rate through electrodes in a chest strap, then send the information to a watch-sized screen on the student's wrist for the student to keep an eye on. After class, the information can be fed from the individual monitors into a computer that can give information about the entire workout.
