Lee had come to the Hatfield residence late Friday night after failing in an attempt to leave the area in a stolen motorboat. When he appeared, the Hatfields put him to bed and notified Sheriff Taylor.

Addison, the other fugitive, was picked up in Jacksonville as he boarded a bus for Savannah, Ga. Sheriff Taylor traced his whereabouts through his purchase of a bus ticket at Apalachicola. Ticket agent Mrs. Willie Mae Howard reported selling a ticket for Savannah via Tallahassee and Jacksonville to a man of Addison's description. Duval authorities arrested Addison after being alerted by Sheriff Taylor.

Before their escape, Addison and Lee were being held pending results of a presentence investigation after conviction for breaking and entering and auto theft.
