It was coach Sara first year. She had a tough act to follow former coach Nancy Grace, who retired and is now the athletic director at Canton, coached for 20 years and won eight state titles. Canton had a year to adjust and agroup of younger, talented players have moved up to varsity. Despite returning two starters and starting a freshman in goal, the Warriors (4-0) are off to a good start, ranked eighth in the first state coaches poll.

The tough part of the season comes in the middle of next month. Canton will play five games in eight days. In back-to-back games, the Warriors will face Simsbury, which advanced to the Class semifinals, on Oct. 14, and Cheshire, which lost to Greenwich in the Class state championship game, Oct. 16.

They also will play Glastonbury (unbeaten and ranked fifth in the poll) Nov. 1, the last game of the regular season. Senior Kelsey Squier is the leading scorer (three goals) and sophomore forward Crista Atkinson has scored twice. Senior center back Jen Peterson and fellow captain, midfielder Lisa Bahre, have taken on leadership roles for the team. Junior Emily Getler, the younger sister of former Canton standouts Meredith and Kristen Getler, is solid at center midfield.

Greenwich will play unbeaten Darien in an FCIAC game Tuesday at Darien. Darien (6-0) is ranked second in the poll and Greenwich (3-1) is seventh.

Haddam-Killingworth junior forward Leslie Zules leads the Shoreline in scoring with 10 goals and four assists in five games for H-K (6-0). Zules had 20 goals to lead the conference last year.
