those delinquent on road taxes in Bancroft There were but 21 delinquents and county auditor Bamess informs us that it is the small est list returned from any town of the county The October apportionment of the state school fund amounts to so little but a few dollars to each district that it is not worth publishing Especially is this so when it is considered that the money willbe withheld by the county to make good the refundments due from each district residence is rising to It will be one of the most elegant and substantial dwellings in the city and in architecture it will exhibit some unique and pleasing features One window in the roof will be of stained glass and will cost The building will be heated with a furnace It is rumored through various chan nels that the Cannon Valley folks have secured a right of way into this city Whether or not this assertion is true we cannot say but that there has been a good deal of property exchanged with in the past few weeks which linked together would be ample for right of purposes cannot be denied Mankato ree Press Mr and Mrs Thomas returned home last Thursday from their New Orleans visit where Mr Thomas was a delegate wishes of many friends will go with Mr Coyne to his new sphere of duty Rev Mr Jones in a letter in this paper very earnestly defends the prac tice of contributing large sums to the support of missionaries and the efforts to christianize the heathen of foreign lands Those who disagree With him are sat down upon with quite an em phatic and we suppose that is meant tn settle the objections and to put a very flattening quietus on the objectors There are some very prac tical and we think more conclusive arguments in support of the position of our friend Mr Jones and these we expect to be is recommended in the highest terms by Mrs Mary A Liver more by the Boston Traveler the Springfield Republican and other lead ing papers Mrs progressive euchre party at the Gilbert House of which she is the popular landlady was a very felicitous event and was enjoyed by an interested company that filled nine tables Mrs Bennett won first progressive prize Chas Si Wil kenson first in the same class Mr Bennett captured foot table prize and it was a lively one and Mrs Wilkenson was awarded foot table prize Mr and Mrs A Root have re turned from their visit to their old home in New York They enjoyed themselves immensely but are glad to be home once more Mr Root brought with him a sample potato and an onion raised on his farm in Schoharie county The former weighs an ounce less than 3 pounds and hundred pounds of butter from this place to Montana last Saturday He manufactures from two to three thousand pounds per year Several Oakland and Moscow farm ers started with loads of produce for the the heaviest wood dealer in southern Min nesota had over 200 cords on hand when the recent drop was made in freight rates and his loss amounts to quite a large sum He says he used to pay $12 per car on wood from Mankato over the Milwaukee road before the St road was built and that no other town so far from the woods has sold wood so cheap as it has been sold at Albert Lea since and on account of the building of that road The Wells Advocate has been bought by Drakef formerly one of the publishers of the Standard and the first number under his management has been issued A trade that he had made for an interest in the Winnebago City Press News was rescinded by Nir Sherin one of the publishers and Mr Drake again joins the press gang through the Advocate He is well known as a capable and enterprising newspaper man and will greatly im prove the Advocate The Standard extends him a fraternal hand and wishes him a very generous measure of success The Christmas lagazine will be strong in stories Besides in stalments of Miss An and of Mr and the farce illustrated by Reinhart there will be a Christmas story down in Lonesome by Charles Egbert Craddock (Miss Murfree) illu strated by Dielman another Madonna of the by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps said to be the strongest short story she has written illustrated by Smedley a third tale Brander Matthews illu strated bv Pyle and a by George Bough ton illustrated by the artist himself Brown is in receipt of a letter from a company in New Haven Connwho control important inventions in clock manufacture and who intend to locate works for the manufacture of clocks at some point in the west They want to know what if any special ad vantages Albert Lea has to offer as a manufacturing point and evidently expect aid in the way of donation of ground buildings or a bonus in getting started It would undoubtedly bean enterprise of great benefit to Albert Lea and it is doubtless advisable to makft some effort to secure its location herd We see by bur exchanges that Red Wing aribault and other cities of the state have received overtures from the company and are responding' to them It might be well for the city council to take the matter in
