PRINCETON, N.J. is flirting with history now. It has been 28 years since the Bulldogs were this close to perfection, and nearly a century since a Yale team accomplished what this one can. No Yale team has had a 10-0 season since 1909, but this one is one victory away. On a day when its running game lacked the usual consistency, Yale used two big pass plays to pull away from Princeton 27-6 Saturday and set up a battle of unbeatens for the Ivy League championship next Saturday at Yale Bowl.

Yale (9-0) and Harvard (7-2) will each take 6-0 league records into The Game, the fourth time in league history two unbeat- ens will play on the final weekend. But Yale has more at stake not only sole ownership of the Ivy title for the first time since 1979, but a chance for its first unbeaten, untied season since 1960 (9-0). Four times in the last 100 years 1921, and Harvard has ruined perfect record in the last game. a great opportunity. The stage is set for an amazing Yale cornerback Paul Rice said.

teams are undefeated in the league. The outright title is on the line. is why you play football. When a little kid and you think of playing college football, this is what you think of. This is the stage you want to play In the three previous weeks, Yale had to come from behind to win and keep pace with Harvard in the Ivy race.

This time, the Bulldogs had to break a 3-3 halftime tie. was just a real battle for us coach Jack Siedlecki said. defended us real well. They always do. always seem to have a real good plan against our running game.

We just have the ball at all in the first half. It was completely the opposite of every game played this Yale ran only 22 offensive plays in the first half, and it was Princeton (3-6, 2-4) that had the better scoring chances. The Tigers had a first-and-goal at the Yale 2 when the Joe Hathaway recovered Adam fumble. Another Princeton drive ended at the Yale 2 when Nick Solakian forced a fumble that Rice caught in midair and returned to the Princeton 43. Seven plays later, Alan 43- yard field goal gave Yale a 3-0 lead.

On the final possession of the half, Princeton reached the Yale 2 again but had to settle for Connor 20-yard field goal and a tie. defense just played Siedlecki said. the difference in the game was turnovers. We have any, and the two they had absolutely killed them in the first half. They drove the ball down the field and had a lot of yards, but they get any points.

be 3-3 at halftime the way we played offensively, we were in pretty good Yale needed only two plays to break the tie when quarterback Matt Polhemus connected with Chris Denny-Brown for an 80- yard touchdown pass, the fourth longest in Yale history. everyone saw Denny-Brown take that one all the way down to the end zone, everything got amped up on the Solakian said. was like a switch was hit. were all like, no way going to lose this Yale took a 13-3 lead on 40-yard field goal two plays into the fourth quarter. After 31-yard field goal made it 13-6, Yale drove 60 yards behind Mike 11 rushes, with Polhemus and Denny-Brown connecting on a 10-yard touchdown pass.

was a typical day for Siedlecki said. was 5-for-12, but two or three of them were absolutely When Yale safety Matt Coombs intercepted a pass at the Princeton 41 and returned it to the 1, McLeod had the chance to extend his Ivy League record to 18 straight games with at least one touchdown, which he did on the second play. The junior, playing with a broken toe, finished with 107 yards on 36 carries, his 10th straight game over 100 yards. is the toughest kid ever Siedlecki said. kid just keeps playing.

Harvard: The Game Gets Bigger YALE 27 PRINCETON 6 Though Trinitystarting quarterback Eric McGrath play Saturday because of a broken bone in his passing hand, the Bantams bothered a bit. we missed running back Jordan Quinones said. we knew we could run it, and there was no way Wesleyan was going to beat Churning out 307 rushing yards, Trinity ran away with a 32-14 victory before 4,511 at Field. The victory in the season finale extended winning streak to seven over its state rival. The Bantams (6-2) relied on their potent ground game, fueled by 114 yards and two TDS and Ollie 113, a defense that caused fiveturnovers, and freshman quarterback Jeff McNamara.

McNamara dazzlingin his first start, but he was effective as he threw for 129 yards (11-for-24) with one touchdown and no interceptions. He got the start after McGrath brokea bone in his left hand in the second quarter last Saturdayat Amherst. Being able to hand the ball off to Jordan and Ollie and watch them get those yards, made it a lot easier on me, Wesleyan (4-4) have its top runner, Shea Dwyer, who missed his second game with an injured right knee. His loss was reflective in the paltry 11 rushing yards on 12 carries. Trinity led 6-0 on field goals of 27 and career-best 42 from Adam Cox.

The Bantams seized the momentum with an 87-yard scoring drive late in the first half. Starnesran for 22 yards on five carries and McNamara completed six passes for 65 yards the final one a 13-yard touchdown screen to Matt Stafford 7 seconds before intermission and Trinity led 12-0. In the second half, Quinones scored on runs of 3 and 12 yards before Wesleyan scored on Zach 4-yard pass to Mark Noonan to make the score 25-7 Trinity early in the fourth quarter. Trinity backup quarterback Craig 1-yard scoring toss to Chris Hunt and 1-yard run completed the scoring. Librizzi, a senior from Essex Junction, often was pressured and took some hits just after throwing.

He showed resiliency and threw for 252 yards (24-for-43 with two interceptions). The last quarter was marred by five unsportsmanlike penalties against Trinity, including two against linebacker Matt Rettig, who had eight tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception. Rettig, who apparently said something to officials, was ejected. behavior was coach Jeff Devanney said. It was lone shortcoming.
