Wm (o) (2) Mathews Blasts Homer; Burdette Collects 14th MILWAUKEE (AP) Eddie Mathews flashed his old time pow-er. ending a long home run drought, and Lew Burdette took care of the pitching. The combination helped the Milwaukee Braves complete a three-game sweep over the lowly Chicago Cubs. Mathews powered his 23rd homer, lined two singles and had a pair of walks as Burdette cruised to his 14th victory with an 8-3 decision over the Cubs Sunday before a crowd of 42,485 at County Stadium. Thes blast by Mathews with two out and none on base in the sixth was his first homer since July 23.

The towering drive into the runway in right was his 361st of his caieer, boosting him into a tie with Joe DiMaggio for 10th place in the all-time home run derby. Burdette scattered eight hits in earning his 10th victory in his last 13 decisions. The Cubs nicked him for two runs in the sixth on a single by Al Heist and Don Zim-mer's homer into the left field stands. Three singles with two out in the seventh provided the third Chicago tally. Three In First The Braves jumped on Chicago starter Bob Anderson for three runs in the first inning.

Lee Maye led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Frank Boiling's double to left center. After Mathews walked, Hank Aaron singled home Boiling. Mathews moved to third as Joe Adcock hit into a double play and scored on a wild pitch. Milwaukee added two in the third on an infield hit by Maye, a two-base throwing error on Boiling's sacrifice bunt and Mathews' line single to right center. Mathews walked starting the Milwaukee fifth and came all the way around as Aaron singled to center and Al Heist made a wild throw.

Aaron took second on the error, moved to third on an infield out and scored as Roy McMillan grounded a hit to right. Burdette, who has lost eight games, struck out five and walked Burdette, who has won 10 of his last 13 decisions, grinned as he quipped: "Only 141 to go (to 300i." Spahn advised him that he had to win 200 first. "Heck, I'm going to be different," Lew shot back. "I'm going to get No. 300 first and then come back and get 200." At 34, Burdette is 64 years younger than Spahn.

Now in his 10th season with the Braves, he figures he has plenty of time left to win 200. Spahn, Robin Roberts and Early Wynn are the only pitchers still active who have reached that victory total. Mathews In 10th Burdette was helped to his de cision over the Cubs by third baseman Eddie Mathews, whose three hits included his 361st major league homer. That tied him with Joe DiMaggio for 10th place among the all-time home run sluggers. The blast was Mathews' 23rd of the season and his first since July 23.

His three RBI's equalled his entire output since homer No. 22. Despite the distant clout and 3-for-3 day, boosting his average to .300, Mathews refused to talk with writers in the clubhouse. have nothing to eay," said the 29-year-old slugger. I have one good day in a month and every one comes around.

No one is around when I have my bad days. So I'm not going to say anything." With Mathews not talking, Spahn and Burdette held court.
