Canton Continued from 1B construction equipment, trucks, diesel engines and other a automotive and light truck applications. At the same time as the company is announcing expansion plans, it is asking the city for a break on water and sewer rates. Joel Dykstra of Adams Thermal said the company thinks the water and sewer rates enacted earlier this year by the city are unfair to the plant, partly because of the way water is used there. The new rates were designed so that the sewer rate is based on how much water is used.

"A significant amount of the water we use does not go back into the system because we have an evaporation system," he said. Dykstra said the company would prefer a sewer rate based on actual usage. The company was set to make its pitch for a change in the rates at Monday's City Commission meeting, but the issue has been delayed until sometime after the Fourth of July holiday. Dykstra said that with the old rate, the company paid $3,000 to $4,000 per month for water and sewer. That cost has risen to between $4,000 and $5,000.

Dykstra said the city has been supportive of the company, and he is optimistic commissioners might consider a change in the utility rates. Calls to Canton Mayor Pete Van Wyhe and Commissioner Jim Nelson, who oversees the water department, were not returned. A change in the utility rates could assist the company's ability to expand, Dykstra said. Reach reporter Corrine Olson at 331- 2311.
