COMMUNITY LIFE The Daily Tribune, Wisconsin Rapids, Wednesday, Nov. 1, 1989 5B.a Engagements AHS sfudenfs excel on national flesi 1111 --1 ii gr.gwyj i b- WIS. RAPIDS Assumption High School's class of 1989 scored 4.2 percentage points above the national average on the American College Test and 2.7 percentage points above the statewide composite score, according to Paul Stauffacher, principal. Eighty percent (63 of 79 seniors) of AHS's seniors took the ACT compared to 52.7 percent of all seniors in the state of Wisconsin last year. The test measures educational development in English, mathematics, social studies, and natural science.

Unlike the Wisconsin average which was down l10th of a point and the national composite score which dropped 210ths of a point from the previous year, Assumption's composite score jumped 3.8 percentage points. "If we look at the top 50 percent of the AHS graduating class, the average composite score leaps to 25.6 5.5 percentage points above the state average and 7.0 percentage points above the national average," Stauffacher said. "Our students are academically well-prepared for college and we encourage all of our students to chose the core curriculum which stresses academic preparedness both for college and technical schools," he said. Scores on the ACT range from 1 to 36 and Assumption's composite score on the four-part test was 22.8 compared to the Wisconsin composite score of 20.1 and the national composite score of 18.6. ACT scores are used by schools in 28 of the 48 states as the predominant college admissions test.

In each of the academic areas. Assumption students scored at least 1.0 percentage point above their Wisconsin counterparts and 2.0 percentage points above students nationwide. A comparison chart is at the bottom of the story. Students generally must achieve a composite score of 21.0 on the ACT or rank in the top one-half of -their class to be accepted into the University of Wisconsin O'Donnell, AHS guidance counselor, said. In the Scholastic Aptitude Test which also measures college.
