Platform that Don't Read Both Ways. The democrats of Massachusetts adopted a platform that is after our own heart. There is no double meaning in it.

Its sentences are clear and concise and even by those who are opposed to the principles therein set forth, it must meet favor on account of its directness. Compared with the recent platform of this state, it is as wheat compared to chaff. On the currency question it has this to sa-: Believing that the true interests of the people require that the earnings of trade and the wages of labor be paid in money that is intrinsically worth, in all the markets of the world, what it purports to be worth, we demand the maintenance of the existing gold standard of value and that the go -eminent shall keep all its obligations at all times redeemable and payable in gold and we oppose the free coinage of silver and any further purchases of silver bullion or the coinage thereof on government account. In reviewing- the historical facts leading up to our present financial distress, the platform says: When Grover Cleveland came to the presidency in 1886 he was confronted with this condition of our finances. By his courage and fidelity, and by the prudence and economy of a democratic house there was accumulated at the end of fts first term a surplus of more than $300,000,000 in the treasury; of which was in gold to protect the national promises; on the return of the Republican party to power in 1889 this surplus of gold has been reduced one-half.

The reckless expenditures of the public money and the passage of an act for the purchase of silver debauched the currency and impaired the credit of the nation. When the democracy again came into power in 1S93, they found an empty treasury, a want of confidence on the part of holders of American securities in all foreign countries, which threw these back upon our markets, forcing- individuals and great corporations into liquidation. Thus the financial policy of the republican party produced wide spread distress and disaster. The leaders of this party had the unparalleled audacity to attribute the distress and disaster to a democratic administration that had just come into power and had not changed a single law. The Massachusetts democrats put themselves on record as being in favor of the nomination for president of their favorite son, "the victorious, courageous, high-principled ex-Governor William Eustis Russell." The Milwaukee Journal of last Wednesday contains the information that the new apportionment law passed by the recent extraordinary session of the Wisconsin legislature is to be tested as to its constitutionality before the Supreme court at its August session.

The Journal usually knows what is going on in matters of this kind, and we accept its statements at par. The test will be made on two grounds: first, that the special session of the legislature was itself illegal and unconstitutional; and second, that the law as passed contains in a marked degree those elements which were so strongly objected to by the Supreme court when the question was before them about three years ago. Prominent lawyers of both parties, says the Journal, are almost of the unanimous opinion that the act will be overturned. The Enterprise has heretofore expressed dissatisfaction with our present senate district, and if the law is set aside, we will either go back to where we were before forming a senate district in conjunction with Marathon county or we will have a chance to better our condition before another extra session of the legislature. If we cannot remain with Marathon couuty, we would like to be attached to Portage county, for it is only with those two counties that we have interests in common.

Our present companions in senatorial matters are Juneau, Waushara and Marquette counties, ane we have nothing in common with them except raising potatoes and the potato industry needs no legislation. The water power interests do. Another point which we wish the honorable legislature would attend to, if it has anything further to do with this business before the next election, is this: Wood county claims the right to vote for a state senator this year. The constitution says that senators shall be elected every four years. Ours was elected four years ago.

Yet the districts were so numbered by the recent extraordinary session of the legislature that we were gerrymandered out of that right and our election of a state senator thus postponed until next election. In the mean time it could be again postponed by pursuing the same tactics. If this is good law, where does the right of suffrage come in? The organs are out of tune again. The Milwaukee organ says that Massachusetts democrats "turned Cleveland down" last Tuesday, and the Oshkosh organ says they endorsed him. Bureau of Immigration and General Industries.

At a meeting of the bureau held at Grand Rapids, March 27th, a plan was adopted for the distribution of the immigration folders. The English edition is completed and in the hands of the secretary and the German and Norwegian editions will be finished in the next two weeks. There are 5,000 English, 3,000 German and 2,000 Norwegian folders. These will be sold or sent out in proportion as printed. All parties desiring 25 or more will be furnished them at the rate of two and one-half cents each.

One half of their order will be filled with the English copies and balance in German and Norweigan. Single copies will be sent out on request. All real estate dealers are requested to furnish the secretary with their names and addresses and if residents and dealers in Wood County their names will appear on an extra sheet which will be enclosed by the secretary with a folder when being sent to home seekers. All reliable dealers will be furnished with a list of inquiries to the secretary made by home seekers from abroad, and such list will be sent out at least once a week and oftener should inquiries come in fast enough to warrant. Such list will be treated as confidential matter and not be allowed to get into hands of parties who would be more interested in getting settlers into another county.

TA Yl.lt'lt. Lumber, Lath, Shingles, Doors, Windows, THE HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN SPOTTED 1I0DACL CHAPTER IV. Continued from our Issue of March 21, 105, The scientific name Bovine Spirilualis) given to this animal on account of the popular belief that on the death of aittsx, its spirit took the form of a hodag. In support of this theory it is reported by at least three reliable woodsmen that soon after Daly Sampson lost a valuable black and white ox in the winter of 1883-4 they saw in the distance a large hodag marked plainly with white on a black background like the ox in question: and what is still more remarkable was distinctly branded on one of its horns. To this day these woodsmen smile a smile of scorn and derision when anyone in their presence presumes to cast a doubt upon this illustration of the an cient theory of transmigration.

011 It is true that the hodag is carniverous, but it also feeds upon small shrubs, and the new shoots on the branches of trees are its favorite diet. It prefers the pine to all other kinds of timber. By means of the hook on its tail it null small trees up by the roots and then feeds upon the branches. (to be continued.
