appeal directly to the minds and hearts of his hearers. It is unnecessary to say that Mr. Carlisle's was decidedly against the free and unlimited coinage of silver, and in favor of the gold standard of values, and that his remarks were not capable of a double construction. The distinguished statesman demonstrated to the satisfaction of his hearers that the threatened revolution in the financial policy of the country could only bring distress and bankruptcy to all of our established institutions; that the laborers would not receive an increase in wages commensurate with the increase in the price of the necessities of life; that a depreciated currency would have to be accepted as pensions to soldiers and sailors, their widows and children; tor losses sustained under policies issued by life and other insurance companies, for deposits in saving banks, trust companies, building associations and other institutions, for debts due to widows and orphans by guardians, ex. ecutors and administrators of decedents' estates and other trustees, for for salaries of all civil, military and naval officials, and the compensation of private soldiers and seamen, and, in short, for every kind of obligation recognized by the laws of the land, except in cases where the prudent capitalist has taken the precaution in advance to contract for payment in gold or its equivalent.

These obligations and many more, being obtained or bargained for under a gold basis, could be settled under a free coinage of silver basis, and the recipients would be legally cheated out of just about half their just dues. Mr. Carlisle gave living examples of his theory, particularly the republic of Chili and the government of Mexico, where silver is the money of the country' and although both are rich in natural resources, yet poverty and distress and a depreciated credit characterize them in the eyes of the civilized world. Coming generations will accord to Grover Cleveland and John G. Carlisle their full meed of credit for contributing so effectually toward stemming the free silver tide; and, although they and their followers may meet such determined opposition within the ranks of their own party as to admit of no possibility of political success, yet they are made of such stuff that they would rather meet defeat on a platform which inj-ures the prosperity of the country than success on one which as surely points to our financial ruin.

Continued from our issue of Mhh-Ii 21, mas. The scientific name (Bovine Spirit ualis) given to tins animal on account of the popular belief that on the death of an ox, its spirit took the form of a hodatf. In support of this theory it is reported by at least three reliable woodsmen that soon after Daly Samp-on lost a valuabl- black and white ox in the winter of 1883-4, they saw in the distance a large hodag marked plainly with white spots on a black background like the ox in question; and what is still more remarkable was distinctly branded on one of its horns. To this day these woodsmen smile a. smile of scorn and derision when anyone in their presence presume to cast a doubt upon this illustration of the an cient theory of transmigration.

tjT It is true that the hodag is carniverotis, but it also feeds upon small shrubs, and the new shoots on the branches" of trees are its favorite diet. It prefers the pine to all other kinds of timber. By means of the hook on its tail it nulla small trees up by the roots and then feeds upon the branches. (To be continued "Jfo deader" is au expression which sound quite harsh, especially when it comes from Mich an apostle of pure English undefiled as is the Milwaukee.
