Town tries to salvage store Owners plan to sell their do-it-all outlet BY DICK JOHNSON Globe Gazette of Mason City, Iowa THORNTON, Iowa Smalltown residents get used to having a hub like Thornton Hardware and Gifts. It's the kind of place where you can drop off your dry-cleaning, get something sharpened, buy a furnace filter, carpet cleaner and a birthday card and, of course, shoot the breeze.

If you're stuck at home, the owners might even drop off your groceries. That's life in Thornton, population 364, about 30 miles southwest of Mason City. Everybody looking out for everybody else. But things are changing. Steve and Cindee Dickman, who have owned Thornton Hardware and Gifts for years, plan to sell it by Jan.

1, 2003. The Dickmans will sell the store for $52,000. It's been there at 321 Main St. for at least 80 years. "We felt when we originally bought the place that we did it to keep the hardware store going," Steve said.

"We did our share. We need some new ideas. It's time for us to move on. "The main object here is to keep it open for the farmers," he said. "You do it to keep things going, keep the town going, keep the farmers going." On Nov.

7, about 20 people gathered to present their feelings about the store, consider options and gauge interest in saving it. REGION DIGEST BLOOMFIELD, Iowa Couple charged for endangering girls, 9 and 13 A rural couple were charged with child endangerment after officials said they chained their two daughters in a closet and sent the girls to school with shaved heads. Clinton and Kathryn Muldoon, of Bloomfield, were arrested last Thursday at their home about 20 miles south of Ottumwa. Each was charged with six counts of child endangerment. The Muldoons pleaded innocent on Friday before a magistrate.

Bond was set at $45,000. A preliminary hearing was set for Monday. Clinton Muldoon was held Wednesday in the Davis County jail. His wife was in the Wapello County jail, the Davis County sheriff's office said. Magistrate Rex Steinkruger ordered the couple to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

The girls, ages 13 and 9, were placed in foster care, authorities said. ST. About 50 people attended a town meeting on Nov. 21 at Meservey-Thornton Elementary and Middle School. Ideas to save the store included selling local products and crafts and having a seasonal farmer's market. A corporation could be formed, with staff and an unpaid board of directors, and shares in the store could be sold to community members. People were asked to write down a realistic number of shares they'd be willing to purchase.

A total of 210 shares were "raised" at $100 apiece. Memberships also could be offered, Thornton resident Julie Carlson said. In return for buying a membership, customers would get discounts on goods and services from the store.
