8 'V- THE POST-STANDARD, Syracuse, Sunday, February 21, 1954 Village News ounty Suburban News 1 ecession in County, Villagers Put More Money in Home Mortgage Loans Increase, Only Few Jobless Despite talk today of an economic adjustment period, villagers in Onondaga County arc putting more money into the banks and they are very active in taking home mortgage loans. However, they are drawing the line on what bankers call "consumer credit," esoecially loans for consolidation of debts and for the purchase of autos and appliances. Layoffs by industries in the county have been felt in the villages; jbut these have not been heavy layoffs and, for the most part, they are temporary ones. Of course, for some time village workers have been on a reguiar work week and have not received the benefit of overtime. Nonetheless, bank reports of deposits indicate that villagers largely are in sound i a i a condition.

PLAN FOR RA1XY DAY The increase in savings, according to bankers, is not tremendous, but it indicates that wage earners; are consistently putting aside buck for a rainy day." An increase in population in most village areas also accounts for the in savings. In some wage earners set aside certain sum each pay.day for eachj member of the family. This is! decidedly a trend which bankers' have noted in their studies of local savings accounts. What ket-ps the activity of home mortgage loans on a par with recent years is the active building continuing in most parts of the county--in North Syracuse, Baldwinsville, Fayetteville, Manlius, Fairmount, Westvale and environs. FELT GE LAYOFF One of the recent layoffs which were felt in villages in the county was that of 1.2QO from Gener.il Electric More than half of those sent home from villages and communities outside Syracuse, according to a spokesman who released the following statement: SEA HAWKS VISIT starboard crew of the Mattydale Sea Hawks stand before a commercial plane while visiting Hancock Field last week.
