B6 THE HARTFORD COURANT: Friday, May 6, 1983 Sidney Skolsky Dies; Hollywood Writer Associated LOS Skolsky, Skolsky, a pioneering Hollywood columnist, producer and broadcast personality whose career spanned more than a half-century, has died of acute Parkinson's disease.

Skolsky died Tuesday one day after his 78th birthday at a Hollywood convalescent home, according to his daughter Steffie Sidney. Funeral services were scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Mount Sinai-Forest Lawn Mortuary, she said. Skolsky began his career as a Broadway publicist and, in 1929, took over a Broadway column in the New York Daily News. Transferred to Hollywood in 1932, Skolsky later went to work for the New York Daily Mirror, then the New York Post, and was syndicated nationwide.

"His first love was Broadway. He didn't think he'd like it out here at all. "He was barred from MGM because he was the first to tell peo-. ple that there were no backs to the sets, that stars had stuntmen doing their dangerous stunts, that there were stand-ins.

Her father also contributed to establishing the nickname "Oscar" for the Academy Award statuette. "He was the first newsman to use the word 'Oscar' in print," in a March 1934 column, Sidney said. CROUSE. Rita I. (Johnson) Crouse, 61, of 177 Retreat Hartford, died Thursday (May 5) at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Born in De Witt, lowa, she had lived in Hartford for over 20 years.

Mrs. Crouse worked in the Cheer Cupboard of St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center for the last 11 years. She is survived son, Kenneth M. Johnson of Hartford; a daughter, Judith M.

Fairbanks of Salina, two brothers, Edward Johnson of De Witt, Iowa, and Joseph Johnson of Rock Island, three sisters, Dolores Henning of Hammond, Mildred Adams of Rockwell, lowa, and Genevieve Adams of Watertown, and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday, 8 a.m., from the Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, 1276 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 8:30 a.m. in St. Peter's Church. Burial will be in Mount St.

DONOVAN. James J. Donovan, 48, of 78 Englewood West Hartford, died Thursday (May 5, 1983) at Hartford Hospital. Born in Hartford, he had lived in West Hartford for 38 years. He was a graduate of Hall High School, and had attended the University of Connecticut.

EDMUNDS. Florence (Horton) Edmunds, 98, formerly of Heritage Cove, Essex, died Wednesday (May 4) at Middlesex Memorial Hospital. Wife of Fred Edmunds Sr. She was a resident of Essex for 20 years. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Fred Edmunds Jr.

of Pensacola, a granddaughter, Mrs. Michael (Margaret) Bemis, and a greatgranddaughter, Catherine J. Bemis, both of Clinton, N.J. Funeral and burial services will be private. No calling hours.

Robinson, Wright Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Centerbrook, has charge of arrangements. FITZSIMMONS. James E. Fitzsimmons, 70, of West Hartford, died Thursday (May 5) at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

Born in Hartford, he lived there many years, moving to West Hartford 35 years ago. He was employed by the state of Connecticut Motor Vehicle Department for 42 years, retiring in 1973, and was a member of the Church of St. Helena, West Hartford. He leaves a brother, William Fitzsimmons of Manchester; a sister, Mrs. May F.

Ragan of West Hartford; two nephews and two nieces. Funeral services will be Saturday, 9:15 a.m., from the Richard W. Sheehan Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain West Hartford, with a mass of Christian burial, 10 a.m., in the Church of St. Helena. Burial will be in Mount St.

Benedict Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home today, 3-4 and 6-8 p.m. HAYES. William J. Hayes, 85, of 14 Park Plainville, died unexpectedly Thursday (May 5) at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Newington, after a short illness.

He was born in Farmington, and lived in Plainville for well over 50 years. He was formerly employed by Manning-Armstrong Co. of Hartford, as a salesman, retiring 15 years ago. He was a veteran of World War II. For many years Mr.

Hayes sang as a leading tenor soloist at St. Joseph's Cathedral, as well as many Protestant churches in Hartford, at Sunday services or special occasions. He was a former member of the Hartford Choral Club. He is survived by a brother, James Hayes of Warren, and two nieces, Miss Marie Hayes of Plainville, and Mrs. Ruth Gerrish of Burke, Va.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 9 a.m., from the Plainville Memorial Funeral Home, 106 W. Main Plainville, and at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, Farmington. Burial will be in St.

He was born in Collinsville, and had lived in the West Hartford area for 32 years. He was vice president of Colonial Hardware in West Hartford, and retired in late 1966.

He' helped to restart the West Hartford Chamber of Commerce, was 'a member of Central Merchant's Association and was its first chairman. He also instigated the first West Hartford Days Program, whose slogan was "Go West for the best." He is survived by two cousins, Muriel Croteau and Verna Scheidel, both of Collinsville. Funeral services will be Saturday (May 7) at 1 p.m., at the Taylor Modeen Funeral Home, 136 S. Main West Hartford, with the Rev. Archie McRee officiating.

Born in New London, she lived in Hartford for over 50 years. She was a member of South Congregational Church of Hartford, and the Ladies Sewing Club the church. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ernest (Violet) Jurs of Hartford; a sister, Mrs. Marguertie Reilly of Clarendon, Hills, a grandson, Kenneth R.

He leaves three sons, Edmundo, Dante, and Rodolfo Aquije, all in Hartford; four grandson; three brothers, a and a sister in Peru. HOLCOMB. Raymond W. Holcomb, 80, of Gorham, Maine, formerly of New Britain, died Wednesday (May 4) in Portland, Maine. He was employed by the Landers, Frary and Clark Co.

for 47 years, and 15 years until his retirement in 1977, with the New Britain National Bank. His wife, the former Dorothy A. (Ripple) Holcomb, died in 1979, and he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Herrick of Gorham, Maine; three sons, Bruce F. Holcomb of Windsor Locks, Burritt R.

Visiting hours will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. IANNUCCI. Luigi lannucci, 80, of Solopaca, Prov. di Benevento, Italy, father of Filippo lannucci, died May 5, 1983, in Italy.

Besides his son of Wethersfield, he leaves a daughter, three sons, and eight grandchildren, all in Italy; a daughter-in-law, Maria lannucci, and two grandchildren, all in Wethersfield, and several nieces and nephews. Piotr Karnas, 65, of 45 School Hartford, husband of Frances (Fiutak) Karnas, died Thursday (May 5) at his home.

He was born in Poland, and had lived Hartford for over 32 years. He was a past president of the Polish National Alliance Lodge No. 464, and was a member of the Polish Army Veteran's Association Post No. 199. He was a communicant of Ss.

Cyril Methodius where he served as an usher and collector. Besides his wife, he leaves a sister, Stanislawa Dymczak in Poland, and a niece and a nephew in Poland. Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Calling hours are today, 7-9 p.m. LEAHEY. Henry M. "Bud" Leahey, 58, of 149 Ratley Road, West Suffield, co-founder and president of Sentry Security and Detective Agency Inc.

of Suffield, died Thursday (May 5) at his home. Born in West Suffield, he had been a lifelong resident. He was a tobacco grower in Suffield, until 1955, when he became a foreman with the American Suppliers of Hartford. In 1972, he co-founded the Sentry Security and Detective Agency in Suffield, serving as its president until his death. Bud was a Navy veteran of World War 11, past commander of the Landry Sic Post No.

9544 V.F.W. of Suffield, past president of the Suffield Lions Club, was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Apollo Lodge No. 59 of Suffield, and a member of All Scotish Rite Bodies. He was a supernumerary police officer in Suffield for 25 years, and was also a Suffield constable. He was a member of the West Suffield Congregational Church.

He leaves two sons, Matthew J. Leahey of Springfield, and Thomas M. Leahey of Alexandria, daughter, Michelle A. Leahey of Windsor Locks; his mother, Hazel (Weatherbee) Leahey of Suffield, and a grandchild. Funeral services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at the Nicholson Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St.

Francis Hospital and Medical Center. He was the widow of Eunice (Girtman) Krikorian. He was born in Erivan, Russian Armenia, and had lived in Wethersfield for 15 years, moving to Newington eight years ago. Mr. Krikorian owned and operated Krikorian Oriental Rugs Inc.

on Fifth Avenue in New York, from 1925 until his retirement in 1960. He is survived by many nephews and nieces, including Gary Krikorian of Mountain View, and Larry Krikorian of Los Angeles, and Shirley Hopkins of Tacoma, Wash. John A. Leonard, 90, of West Hartford, beloved husband of Eileen (Gaffney) Leonard, died Thursday (May 5) at a local convalescent home. Born in Wallingford, he lived in Meriden, prior to moving to West Hartford. He was a sales engineer with Southern New England Telephone retiring in 1958, after 35 years. He was an Army veteran of World War a member of the American Legion for 61 years, and a member of the Church of St.

Brigid. Besides his wife, he leaves A. Leonard Jr. of Silver Spring, two daughters, Mrs. John (Anne) Hostage of Nashua, N.H., and Mrs.

Raymond (Eileen) Cormier of Newington; a brother, Charles J. Leonard of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren, and four greatgrandchildren. A mass of Chrisbe Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Brigid Church.

Austin B. MacKinnon, 79, of 15 Adelaide Hartford, died Thursday (May 5, 1983) at Charlotte-Hungerford Hospital, Torrington. Born in Houlton, Maine, he lived in Hartford over 33 years. He retired from Pratt Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepard, Hartford, and a member of the Morning Star Lodge of Warehouse Point.

Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Born in Hartford, he had lived in South Windsor, moving to Newington in 1965. He was a graduate of Hartford High School, and was employed by Emhart Manufacturing Co. in Windsor for 30 years, retiring three years ago. Mr.

O'Meara was a member of St. Mary's Church in Newington. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Thomas A. O'Meara of Bridgeport, Timothy S. O'Meara of Hoboken, N.J., and Philip O'Meara of Southington; a daughter, Mary-Ellen Pavlov of Cromwell; two brothers, James W.

06111. RAFFA. Frank A. Raffa, 71, of Manning Lane, East Hartford, beloved husband of Ann (Ferrigno) Raffa, died Thursday (May 5) in Pompano, Fla. Born in Hartford, he lived in East Hartford since 1952.

He had owned and operated Raffa's Package Store for 30 years, retiring five years ago. He was a member of St. Christopher's Church, East Hartford, the Knights of Columbus Council 3901 of East Hartford, and Connecticut Package Stores Association. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Frank J. Raffa of South Windsor; a daughter, Carol Barbrick of Palm Beach Gardens, a brother, Dr.

Schuster was born in New Hartford, April 6, 1924, a daughter of the late Leon and Julia (Sztaba) Sekulski, and resided in the area all of her life. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Bernard Schuster of Burlington; three daughters, Ms. Margaret Schuster of Burlington, Mrs. Kevin (Marilyn) Palmer of Bloomfield, and Ms. Bernadette Schuster of Bristol; four brothers, Francis, John, Joseph and Paul Sekulski, all of New Hartford; three sisters, Mrs.

Alexander K. Udvardy, 52, of 8 Gardner Road, Vernon, died Wednesday (May 4) at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Bente (Hansen) Udvardy. He was born in Detroit, Nov. 13, 1930, and had lived in Vernon since 1961.

Prior to retiring in July of 1982, he was employed as a senior engineer in the Systems Group at Pratt Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford, where he had worked for 21 years. He was a graduate of Wayne State University, Detroit, and attended the F.G.I. Church of Manchester. Besides his he is survived by his mother, Eileen Udvardy of Madison Heights, a son, Michael Udvardy, and a daughter, Melissa Udvardy, both at home; two brothers, Robert Udvardy and John Udvardy, both of Livonia, a sister, Mrs. Barbara Gorske of Bridgeman, and several nieces and nephews.

Walker, 65, of East Elmhurst, L.I., N. died Wednesday (May 4) at home. Husband of Grace (Cooper) Walker. Born in Brunswick, he lived in Hartford many years before moving to New York. He was the son of Mrs.

Susie (Walker) Thomas of Hartford, and the late Rev. R.L. Walker. He served overseas with United States Army during World War II. He was a gradvate of New York University, and retired last years as a supervisor in the New York Department of Social Services.

He was also a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. Besides his wife, and mother, he leaves a son, Jaison Walker of Long Island, N. two daughters, Mrs. Sharon Walker Faust, and Mrs. Andrea Walker Carter, both of Laurelton, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs.

10, 1903, Hospital, San Diego, A April he was the son of the late Andrew and Theresa (Taksar) Ponchak of East Hartford. He enlisted in 1920, retired 1946 with 26 years of service. He was one of five brothers who served their country in World War II. After his retirement from the Navy, he was postmaster in Bostonia, for 10 years. He leaves three sisters, Margaret Bacon of Warehouse Point, Grace Dauble, and Dorothy Sullivan of Glendale, N.Y.; five brothers; Alexander Ponchak of West Hurley, N.

Van Deusen: Born in Pennsylvania, she was a resident of Andover for 41 years. She retired from Coventry School System in 1968 after 19 years of teaching service. She was a mem: ber of the Andover Grange, and the Andover Congregational Church for many years. She is survived by a son, Charles J. Van Deusen of St.

OLD SAYBROOK A 53-yearold man was killed Thursday in a one-car accident near his home. John Downie Jr. of 122 Schoolhouse Road was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:34 p.m.

accident. Old Saybrook police said Downie was traveling on Schoolhouse Road, near Beacon Hill Road, when his car went off the right side of the road and rolled over. He was alone in the car. Downie's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Lottery Winner Plans To Spend A 43-year-old Milford man won $100,000 Thursday in the Connecticut Lottery's Rainbow Jackpot show.

The winner, Max Andranovich, said he planned to "spend (the money) and enjoy it while I'm still young." Andranovich is the manager of the Town Fair tire store in Bridgeport. His wife, Beverly, is a homemaker. They have four children. Other winners Thursday were: Pauline Kulig of Bristol, Carol Caruso of West Suffield, Mildred Brophy of New Haven, and Robert Ford of Watertown, $2,000. DEATH NOTICES BAARS.

Fedo G. Baars, 77, of 6 Sioux Road, East Hartford, formerly of Portland, died Thursday (May 5) at home, after a long illness. Born in Kiel, West Germany, Aug. 25, 1905, he was a retired machinist at Pratt Whitney division of United Technologies, East Hartford. He leaves his wife, Louise (Weimer) Baars; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by a son, Edwin P. Baars. Funeral services will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main Portland. Interment will follow in Swedish Cemetery, Portland. Calling hours are today, 7-9 p.m.

She was born Jan. 28, 1916, in Woburn, daughter of the late Edwin T. and Lottie (Rollins) Bailey Sr. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Carl W. Bailey 111 Isle Of Palms, S.C., and David BaiPot ley of West Simsbury; a brother, Edwin T.

Bailey Jr. of Hudson, N. and four grandchildren. Services will be private. It is suggested that gifts in her memory be sent to the McLean Home, the Hospice Program, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, Ct.

Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Born in Sessa Aurunca, province of Caserta, Italy, he lived in the Hartford area all his life. He retired seven years ago from the City of Hartford. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Joseph (Jennie) Musolino of Windsor; a brother, Anthony Ciriello of Canton; several nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
