"Wow! It's absolutely amazing, I can't believe I pulled this match out today," said Sharapova, who lost in the third round last year and the second round in her first U.S. Open two years ago.

"So many ups and downs. I just found a way to fight. A lot of credit to Nadia, she played an amazing match. "I thought it was too easy in the beginning. I was on fire.

She wasn't playing that badly, I was just making winner after winner. All of a sudden, I just went out of the stadium and my mojo wasn't there. The last game I guess it just decided to come back." Lleyton Hewitt, the 2001 champion and runner-up to Federer last year, reached the quarters for the sixth straight year with a 6-1, 6-4, 6- 2 win over No. 15 Dominik Hrbaty, who drew more attention for his pink peekaboo shirt than his play. "It made it a lot easier for me to beat him today," Hewitt said.

"I just couldn't lose to a bloke wearing a shirt like that." Hewitt advanced to play Jarkko Nieminen, who became the first Finn to reach the quarters in a Grand Slam event with a 6-2, 7- 6 (6), 6-3 victory over Spain's Fernando Verdasco. Federer next plays 1 1th-seeded David Nalbandian of Argentina, a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-2 victor over Italian Davide Sanguinetti. Federer said before that match he would prefer Nalbandian, "because I have a bad record against him." Former champion John McEnroe liked that. "That's what you love about Roger he embraces the challenge." Nalbandian holds a 5-2 record against Federer, though Federer won the last two meetings in 2003 and '04. "I like to play against guys who have beaten me, especially early in the career, try to get them back," Federer said. "He was a tough opponent for me for a long, long time." The 24-year-old Federer lost only one set on the way to his third Wimbledon title two months ago, and that also was against Kiefer, who gives him tough matches but can't quite win. Federer has beaten the German six straight times, four of them this year. After losing the second-set tiebreaker when he netted a backhand half-volley, Federer found himself in difficulty at 3-3 in the third when he faced double break point at 15-40.

His answer: a 120 mph service winner to save one break point, a brilliant backhand crosscourt pass to save another. Kiefer made two errors after that and his opportunity was gone. "That game was huge, absolutely," Federer said. "I was not so happy the way I was playing, especially in the second set. Third was getting better, especially after that pass.

I really felt that shift in momentum. I took advantage of that. In the fourth set, I started to feel like I'm really in control again where I didn't feel that way at all before. I had the feeling actually momentum was all on his side." Said McEnroe: "Federer's play, for him, is like a B-plus, which for anyone else is an A-plus. For him, he hasn't really played as well as he's capable of." provided some of the 100 volunteers, while other companies pitched in food and other supplies to help sort and load the donations.

In other Katrina developments: The NBA players' association has pledged to spend at least $2.5 million on relief efforts, matching the contributions it made to victims of the Sept. 1 1 terrorist attacks. The union is not giving the money to a charity, choosing instead to administer the program itself. Approximately 90 tractor-trailers with food supplies have been delivered through Feed the Children, players' association executive director Billy Hunter said. About 30 more trucks, accompanied by some players, will leave Jackson, next week and ride into some outer areas.

Caravans also will go to Houston with food and other forms of aid. Tulane athletic teams will be based this fall at five universities in Texas and Louisiana. The teams will stay together and play under the Tulane banner. Tulane's football team, which has been working out at SMU in Dallas, is moving later this week to Louisiana Tech in Ruston, about 230 miles north of New Orleans. The players will enroll in classes there that begin next week.

The men's basketball team, along with the volleyball, swimming and diving and women's soccer teams, will be at Texas The women's basketball team and the baseball team will go to Texas Tech. The New York Yankees presented a check for $1 million to the Salvation Army before their game against Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. NL Bowling Green at Alabama 12 Mississippi S. atOtiioSt. PK Texas The Associated Press Steve McNair hoped to fill six tractor-trailers with supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina in his home state of Mississippi, as well as Louisiana and Alabama. Turns out, this time the Tennessee quarterback's aim was a little short. From beat-up pickup trucks to luxury cars, residents filed through a parking lot at the Titans' stadium Tuesday and filled the six tractor-trailers midway through the 12-hour drive, forcing organizers to call in more trucks.

By the end of the collection at 7 p.m., 20 trailers had been filled, and it was possible that 25 would be filled when they were done packing, said Mike Mu, executive director of the Air Steve McNair Foundation. A minimum of $80,000 in monetary donations was collected, including $50,000 from an anonymous person. "I'm amazed," McNair said as he looked around the lot at clothing, shoes, bottled water, diapers and other supplies waiting to be loaded into empty trucks. "You have to be amazed because in a short period of time to put something like this together. My hat goes off to the people who came here who went through their closets and supplies and donated some things to send to people who don't have anything." McNair spent the weekend in Mississippi surveying the damage and flew back to Nashville on Tuesday to help with the relief drive.

Mu said $30,000 came in Friday and Saturday alone and they devised the relief drive as a way to immediately come up with much-needed supplies like bottled water and food. The foundation teamed with Ozburn Hessey Logistics, which provided the tractor-trailers.
