14 Sheboygan Press, Monday, May 21, 1973 Horace Mann Student Council New Miss USA Has Local Ties Honored At Banquet, Program appreciation of the efforts of 3:1 the Council and urged next year's officers to be sensitive to the needs of all students. Musical selections included two vocal solos by Chris Bifano and a saxophone quartet comprised of Patti Saunders, Ruth Gartman, Sara Gross and Bill Schae-fer. The program concluded with the entire group participating in coordination games led by Dan Felton. Members of the P.T.A. who served dinner were the Mmes.

Robert Buschmann, Richard Heronemous, John Messich, Kurt Reinbacher and Sheila Watson. This year's officers include Jody Fischer, president; James Rami, vice-president; Lori Minster, secretary and Debra Mehalopoulos, treasurer. Newly elected 1973-74 officers are Keely Phippen, president; Julie Hed, vice-president; Debra March-iando, secretary, and Lon Hanke, treasurer. Master of ceremonies, Jody Fisher, briefly reviewed accomplishments of the Council. As money-making projects, the Council sponsored the sale of jackets and sweat shirts, the noon hour sale of potato chips, and various other activities.

Profits from these activities and the coke machine were used for the purchase of Horace Mann Charger jackets for the band and athletic teams. Presentation was made by Lori Minster with Principal Burkett accepting the jackets for the school. He and Brewer were each presented with a jacket. The principal spoke of his Student Council activities for the current school year at Horace Mann Junior High School culminated with a banquet held in the school cafeteria to honor members. Main speaker of the evening was Dan Felton, senior from Appleton West High School and former president of the Wisconsin Association of Student Councils.

"The totally apathetic person does not exist," the speaker stated. "He is interested in one thing but not another. It is therefore, the obligation of the student council to seek out those areas which reflect the student interest if the council is to function as an effective organization." Besides Dan Felton, other special guests included the Rev. Michael White of St. Luke United Methodist Church, who delivered the invocation and benediction, Principal Hugh Burkett, Assistant Principal Warren Brewer and Mrs.

Brewer, and Harold Biebel, faculty advisor to the Council. By DAWN BELLEAU Press Staff Writer When Amanda Jones, Miss USA 1973, frolicked in the sand on Sheboygan's North Beach, her proportions were 20-20-20. Today her measurements may be mathematically more interesting, but her grandmother, Mrs. Martin Kummer of 705 North says 22-year-old Amanda Jones is still the same girl that has been coming to visit her grandmother, uncles, aunts and cousins here since she was a baby. Amanda is a free-lance model from Evanston, 111.

Her mother, Eloise Kummer, grew up in Sheboygan and after graduation from Central High School followed a career in radio and TV in the Chicago area. Amanda's aunt and uncle are Mr. and Mrs. Milton Kummer, 1413 Kaufmann and her grandfather was the late Martin Kummer, a former superintendent of streets for the City of Sheboygan. Mrs.

Kummer described her reaction as she watched the televised pageant on Saturday night. "I was just delighted when she made it to the semi-finals, but I had no idea then that she would win." "When it was over, I tried to reach my daughter Eloise in Evanston, but her phone line was so jammed, I couldn't get through until 12:45 a.m. Mrs. Rummer's next-door-neighbor William Nelson came over to watch the pag eant with Mrs. Kummer, "And both of us just didn't know what to think," she related.

"Mandy called me yesterday from New York," her grandmother told The Press today, "and she's hoping her schedule will allow for a visit here soon." "She's always loved coming to Sheboygan." Her grandmother describes the winner of Saturday's Miss USA pageant as "very capable and progressive." Interviewed by newsmen Sunday, the reigning beauty expressed her support of equal rights for women, particularly the right to abortion. "It's the decision of the woman and the woman alone. And she deserves every bit of assistance legal and medical that she can get." On the status of women, she said, "Women are capable of carrying on any career they want. Liberation means your own personal fulfillment." The deaths of several of her friends in Vietnam and studies she made at the University of Colorado, convinced her that U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia was wrong and she has marched in several anti-war demonstrations.

"But not the ones that turned out to be violent; I'm against violence," she said. The new Miss USA is 5 foot 84 inches tall and her measurements these days might attract more attention at North Beach, 36-24-36. mmmmimmmym. iIIBSlpIlilil I II 1 Sorority Hears Culture Panel May Special Reg. $15.00 COLD WAVE ihhc only $975 HAIRCUT and STYLING INCLUDED Cmmet BEAUTY SHOP ESTHER TEN PAS Owner and Manager Bowler Bldg.
