Iowa may move to 21 games BOONE, Iowa A move is under way to level the playing floor, so to speak, in boys basketball scheduling. At its Oct. 28 meeting, the Board of Control for the Iowa High School Athletic Association will take up a proposal to limit boys basketball teams to 21 regular-season games, starting in the 2000-2001 season.

The 2 1 games would be a hard limit, with no exceptions for conference or county tournaments or for helping a school that has trouble filling its schedule, said Rick Wulkow, assistant executive director of the IHSAA. Girls basketball already has a 21-game limit. Schools are being surveyed on the proposal now and the results will be forwarded to the board. "I think if the survey shows a strong majority, the board will consider it," Wulkow said Monday, i Currently, boys teams are limited to 18 games, or 17 plus an in-season tournament. That format creates some imbalance because a number of schools routinely get two or three extra games by playing in tournaments.

NATIONAL ACC suspends officiating crew GREENSBORO, N.C. The Atlantic Coast Conference on Monday suspended for one game all six officials who refereed Saturday's Clemson-North Carolina State game. Reviews of video tape replays and interviews with officials and game administrators confirmed complaints by both schools, league officials said. "Our review of the situation involving penalties during the State game leaves no doubt that the officials errored in their application during the course of the contest," ACC commissioner John Swofford said. He called officials James Knight, Frank Over-cash, Mike Looney, Bill Wampler, Rick Page and Virgil Valdez "extremely competent." The game crew apparently erred once when marking off yardage on a penalty and once when the 25-second play clock apparently expired without a violation being called.

Florida State wide receiver Peter Warrick and former Seminole Lav-eranues Cole on Monday pleaded innocent to charges of theft and got a new lawyer. Warrick, a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy before his arrest, and Coles are accused of paying $21.40 for $412.38 worth of clothes with the help of a department store clerk. They turned themselves in to police Friday after being charged with felony theft. Warrick, 22, was suspended from the team and was on the sidelines during Florida State's 31-21 win over Miami on Saturday. Under university policy, he would be able to return to the team once he takes care of his legal obligations in the case.

Coles, 21, was kicked off the team because he had been on probation for earlier academic and legal troubles.
