THE HARTFORD COURANT: Thursday, August 2, 1984 B7 THE SUMMER GAMES RESULTS JFn Pentathlon BASKETBALL Men Group A Pis PF PA Yugoslavia 3 0 6 290 246 llaly 2 0 4 190 134 Australia 2 1 4 207 232 Brazil 11 2 163 158 Egypt 0 3 0 213 301 West Germany 0 3 221 343 Group USA 3 0 6 290 185 Spain 2 0 4 190 172 Uruguay 1 2 2 249 298 China 1 2 2 214 301 Canada 1 2 2 271 252 France 0 2 0 0 170 176 United Press International Daniele Masala won Italy 's second gold medal of the Olympics, taking the modern pentathlon with a burst of speed in the final event, the crosscountry, and beating Svante Rasmu-son of Sweden. Rasmuson won the silver in the event, which combines the 2 -mile run with shooting, fencing, swimming and equestrian events. Carlos Massullo of Italy won the bronze. Michael Storm, a 24-year-old business school graduate from Arlington, won the pistol shooting and led the U.S.

team to a silver medal in team competition. Italy won the gold. It was the first time a U.S. competitor had won an event in the four-day, five-event competition. Backed byearly, strong performances by Robert Gregory Losey and Dean Glenesk, the U.S.

team maintained a strong hold on second place. France was third, Switzerland fourth and Mexico fifth. The silver medal was the seventh of the Games for the U.S. The U.S. finished with 15,568 points, 92 points less than the Italians and just three points ahead of France.

The event was weakened by the boycott of the Soviet team, which would have been favored to win the gold. Storm had the highest finish on the U.S. team. He was fifth in the individual division with 5,325 points. Greg Losey had 5,158 and Glenesk 5,085.

Storm earned a business degree from the University of Pennsylvania two years ago and has been preparing fori this event ever since. His father is an engineer with NASA and his mother sells real estate. Far back in 23rd place after the opening equestrian event Sunday, Storm steadily improved his position with a 12th place in Monday's fencing event and a ninth place in Tuesday's swimming. Storm's time of 3:18:20 for the 300-meter swim was far from his best in what had been one of his strongest events. "Fourteen hours of fencing takes a lot out of you," he said.

But it was followed by Wednesday morning's near-perfect shooting score. Tuesday's Results China 85. France 83 Spain 107, Uruguay 90 United Stales 89. Canada 68 Wednesday's Results Australia 67. West Germany 66 Canada 121.
