CALL COLLECT (203) 651-9396 Ira Mrodua Ira Ms. Editor To Address New Group The Greater Hartford Jewish Federation is forming a Business and Professional Women's Group, which will feature a talk by Ms. magazine editor Letty Cottin Pogrebin at its first meeting Oct.

29. The group is aimed at working women and is meant to help them keep in touch with volunteers in nonprofit organizations, said Marilyn Steinmetz, group chairwoman. "A lot of these people have gotten their start, their training in the volunteer sector, and they don't want to lose touch," she said. The new group is also designed to educate participants on various topics including current affairs and women's issues, and to help the Jewish federation's fund-raising efforts, Steinmetz said. Similar Jewish women's groups are being organized in major cities across the country, she noted.

The group, Steinmetz said, will allow women to "network" develr op contacts and share similar interests and problems. Invitations are being sent out to Jewish women in the greater Hartford region. Steinmetz hopes to recruit some 300 women, and although the group targets Jews, "anybody's welcome," she said. Meetings will be held about three times a year with guest, speakers or panel discussions at places to be announced. The Oct.

29 gathering will start at The Hartford Club, 46 Prospect Hartford, at 5:30 p.m. with a cash wine reception, followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and Pogrebin's speech at p.m. The cost is $15. Pogrebin will talk on "Gender: Female, Religion: Jewish, Outlook: Feminist," addressing problems associated with being female, Jewish and a business woman.

Channel 18 Sale Approval Close Continued from Page CI fourth attempt to sell the station. Television Digest, a daily trade paper that covers the TV business, reported Monday that the commission decision to approve the sale to Astroline was made over the objections of the FCC staff. Several FCC staff members declined to comment on that report. Sherburg, meanwhile, is proceeding aggressively on several legal fronts to further his cause.

He has filed a suit last June that asks a federal court to order the FCC to take the license away from Scott. He has also asked the court to obtain and review videotapes of last week's closed FCC meeting to scrutinize alleged improprieties. Despite all the costly legal maneuvering, executives at competing stations in Connecticut doubt that Channel 18's license has much value. They say that whoever owns Channel 18 will have a hard time making money in the Hartford-New Haven TV market, which has independents WTXX (Channel 20) of Waterbury and WTIC-TV (Channel 61) of Hartford as well as three network-affiliated stations.
