The victory gave the 76ers a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven National Basketball Association Eastern Conference semifinal.

Erving, who finished with 34 points, started an 8-0 spurt with the Sixers trailing, 111-110, and 5:18 left in the game. The 76ers held on although the Bucks twice came within two points in the last minute. And after Philadelphia went ahead, 125-122, the Bucks had an open three-point shot opportunity they failed to take. There were four seconds left when Milwaukee's Robert Smith had a chance at three-point range that would have tied the game. But he decided to pass off to Marques Johnson inside.

"For some reason, he (Smith) was reluctant to shoot it," Bucks coach Don Nelson said. Smith said, "I was aware we heeded three points. I knew I was within range, and I usually make them from there. It occurred to me it was time to make the shot, but I didn't throw it. "Call it instinct or a mental mistake.

I saw Marques (Johnson) open and threw the ball to him," Smith said resignedly. Erving's relief was prompted by the fact that neither team ever led by more than seven points. There were 14 ties and 20 changes of lead. "All our games (with the Bucks) seem to turn out that way," Erving said. "No lead is safe.

You just can't get too far away." The Sonics open a best-of-seven series against the San Antonio Spurs, the Midwest Division champions, Tuesday in Seattle. Seattle, which turned in a dismal offensive performance Friday in a 91-70 loss in Houston, took control early in the first quarter of the deciding game and led the rest of the way. Lonnie Shelton had 10 points and six rebounds in the first period, which ended with Seattle in front, 27-20. Seattle stretched its lead to 46-30 at half time as Houston, shooting poorly, managed to score only 10 points in the second quarter.

Both teams had their big men on the floor during much of the second period. Auto racing driver David Furioni of Agawam, died Saturday night from injuries suffered in a first-lap accident at a NASCAR Modified qualifying race at Riverside Park Speedway.

Furioni, 25, a two-year race veteran at Riverside, was competing in the first heat of Saturday's program before a capacity crowd of 6,500. When the starting field was given the green flag for the start of the qualifying race, Furioni's accelerator apparently stuck, causing his car to collide With, the vehicle driven by Ray According to Ben Dodge public relations director of the Northeast Professional Racing Association, Furioni's car became airbourne over Miller's car, slammed into the first turn barrier and hit a chain-link fence. It took approximately 15 minutes to remove Furioni from his wrecked vehicle, and he was rushed to the Wesson unit of Bays-tate Medical Center, where he died at 8:34 p.m. The accident happened at 7:32 p.m. According to a Agawam police spokesman, Furioni suffered severe head, chest and internal injuries.

It was reported Furioni was unmarried and employed at Village Motor Sales, Route 159, across from the speedway. Furioni's death was the third at Riverside since 1964 and first in 13 years. Pit crew member Norman Cooper, of Bridgeport, was killed in 1969, and driver Harry Dominick of Valley Stream, N.Y., died in a crash in 1964. Ruggerio Feature Winner The. Riverside program resumed about an hour after Furioni's accident and the top five finishers in has been playing only about nine minutes a game because of the fine play at pivot of Parish and Kevin McHale.

Robey came into the game with Boston leading, 66-62. Robey, slightly smaller than Ruland, wasted no time in battling him for inside position. It was like watching two pickup trucks lock bumpers on a country road to test their engine strength. Robey prevailed and canned his jump-hook while drawing a foul. McHale, who entered the game with Robey, started canning turnaround jumpers, and suddenly the game was out of reach at 92-74.

Robey finished with 10 points and five rebounds in just 15 minutes of play. "Rick would be my choice for the most valuable player," said Maxwell from his locker-room perch next to the game's official MVP Carr. Robey, Maxwell said, "came in and bumped heads and turned things around." Fitch agreed. "Robey gets my game ball today. I couldn't be more pleased with the way he played." 3455 BERLIN TPKE.
