But, if good to check the talent pool." Gasparini was a scout for the Omaha Lancers for three years after playing at goaltender for Min-nesota-Duluth. He admits being a bit overwhelmed by what's transpired since Motzko announced he was leaving 11 days ago for a job as assistant coach at University of Minnesota. "I feel privileged to have this job," says Gasparini, who was vac-tioning in Hawaii with his wife, Krista, when the job came open.

"I didn't expect this to happen so soon." Gasparini promises to keep recruiting skilled athletes who are community-minded. "I'm a big believer in recruiting skill and speed. To play up tempo, you have to have those," he says. He says the team has a strong foundation after going 77-31-6 in two seasons: "Right now, we have an outstanding nucleus coming back. We have a player (winger Thomas Vanek) who might be the bestintheUSHL" Gasparini has talked to Stampede players.

They are excited about the season. I expect big things," he says. Gasparini predicts the team could have the best goalie tandem in junior hockey with Kellen Brig-gs and new signee Layne Sedevie. BY KELLY WHITESIDE USA TODAY After the NCAA recently removed a rule that prohibited televising college football games Friday nights, high school coaches and administrators were apoplectic. Now the outcry has graduated to the college level, as tension grows between the big conferences and the smaller conferences.

The major Division I-A conferences Atlantic Coast, Southeastern, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and Big East say they won't play Fridays. In addition, the ACC says it will propose legislation to reinstate the Friday night ban, which would affect the smaller leagues. Despite legal questions about reinstatement, the NCAA Management Council will discuss the issue at its July 23 meeting. Some smaller conferences resent Big Six interference. "The Big Six conference schools want to keep (the Friday night ban) because they control all the television on the weekend and Thursday night forthe most athletic director Pete Liske said.

Big Six commissioners reject the bully role. Said the Big Ten's Jim Delany: "Nobody is shutting them out of anything. If television doesn't want match on dirt is a struggle for Sampras. Stahlberg and Nick Pernula are expected back. So are defense-man Josh Grahn, Tom Zaleski and Dinos Stamoulis. Ward will stay on as assistant coach. "We've worked well together," he says. "Well continue that" The team will hold its main try-out camp June 9-12 at Blaine.

Minn. The six-month USHLseason opens in late September. The owners and coaches expressed thanks to Motzko for building a great foundation for hockey in Sioux Falls. "Well always be indebted to Bob Motzko," Schoenborn said. "If amazing to see the response in hockey world to this opening after two years.

I would never have expected more than 100 applicants." Gasparini said Motzko influenced him to become a better coach and a better person. "It was the best decision I've made in hockey in getting to know Bob (Motzko) and coming here," he said. Capriati, bidding for her second Grand Slam in a row, beatTathiana Garbin 6-2, 6-1.

Three-time champion Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario lost 1-6, 6-3, 64 to American Amy Frazier, leaving the women's draw without a former tide holder. Sanchez-Vicario, seeded 11th, threw her racket in frustration after the final point and walked off the court to jeers. Ten seeded women and 11 seeded men reached the third round, but not the player considered by many the best ever Sampras. He never recovered from losing a first-set tiebreaker, when he was passed twice and double-faulted. Until the final game, Sampras had only one break point.

The ending was typical he put a forehand into the net from two steps behind the baseline on match point chances than on another surface against him." When Sampras charged the net, he too often got passed. Staying back played into Blanco's hands. "All the baseline points, he was controlling and dictating," Sampras said. Andre Agassi, Sampras' compatriot and rival, watched part of the match before taking the court himself for a straight-set victory. "If never been easy for a game like Pete's to do well here," Agassi said.

"On clay, you can't just explode for one shot and hit through the court. He's great at turning an entire point around with one shot, but on clay you can't You have to fight off three or four, then slowly turn the point around, then slowly finish it" Agassi, seeded third, plays a patient style as well as anyone. He beat Julien Boutter 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 and may pose the biggest threat in Paris to top seed Gustavo Kuerten. No. 2 Marat Safin needed 3 hours to beat Alex Calatrava 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3.

In women's play, No. 6 Serena Williams beat Katarina Srebotnik 6-0, 7-5, then tried to quell the latest controversy to involve her and sister Venus, who lost in the first round. The sisters withdrew from doubles Wednesday and Venus flew home to Florida, stirring talk of a rift between them. "No, we never argue," said Serena, laughing off the subject "Last argument we had was when I was about 6. For us, family is No.

1. It lasts longer than a sport" With five of the 10 top-seeded women already gone, No. 1 Martina Hingis and No. 4 Jennifer Capriati remained on course for a semifinal showdown. Hingis need- came within a point Galo Blanco of his first victory on the men's tour before losing in five sets.

Dating back to 1989, Sampras is 0-for-12 at the only Grand Slam tournament he has yet to win. He's 5-5 in matches at Roland Garros since 1996, when he made his best showing by reaching the semifinals. "As the years go by, it gets more and more difficult," he said. "This is the one that is my biggest challenge. All you can do is learn a little bit from this and come back next year." At 29, Sampras owns a record 13 major titles, seven from Wimbledon alone, and a French trophy would bolster his place in history.

But slow clay gives opponents extra time to counter his serve-and-volley game, so he's sometimes forced to stay at the baseline, where he has slim hope. "Here is different, no?" said Blanco, ranked 76th. "We hit, we get called. They hit, they get nothing. I am open to suggestions. What should we do?" The Bucks hurt, too. Every NBA team does who gets this far, after nearly 100 games and seven months.

But the perception is now of Philadelphia's grit teeth those that haven't been loosened -against Milwaukee's brittle poise. Not entirely fair to the Bucks, who would be hearing none of this had Glenn Robinson's last-second shot only fallen on Wednesday. It didn't, however, leaving Milwaukee cornered and confused and complaining. The Bucks are losing the PR war, not to mention the series.
