obituaries Melvin C. Bruce Mayor Henry CLEVELAND--Melvin Cileries Bruce, 73, of Cleveland, died Wednesday at the East Bolivar County Hospital here. Funeralservices were to be at 2 p.m. today il Thweall-King Funeral Hume in Cleveland. The Rev.Ed Hail was to officiate.

Burial was to follow in the New Cleveland Cemetery. Mr. Bruce was born in Ackerman and moved to Cleveland in 1918. He was engaged in farming until his retirement in 1958. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Ida Bruce; five sons, James Bruce, Johnny Bruce and Roy Lee Bruce, all of Cleveland, Charles Bruce of Greenville and Eugene Bruce of Rosedale, and three daughters, Mrs. Sam Junkin and Mrs. Wade Purvis both of Cleveland, and Mrs. Jesse Purvis of Greenville.

He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Irma Russell of West Monroe, Mrs. Ed Barr and Mrs. Vernon Haven, both of Beulah, and Mrs. Vera Gamble of Greenville, 23 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mattie Floyd Mrs. Mattie M. Floyd, 80, who lived with her daughter, Mrs. James M.

Briscoe of 729 McAllister died Wednesday night at General Hospital following a lengthy illness. Specific time of funeral services have not been scheduled, but Coleman Funeral Home Indianola, who is in charge of arrangements, said they will be Saturday from Emanuel Baptist Church in Greenville with burial in the Drew Cemetery in Drew. High-density bales of cotton were loaded aboard a Lighter Aboard Ship (LASH) barge this afternoon for export to Rotterdam, Holland, Greenville Port Director Milton Barschdorf said. The loading would take about another half- day, he said, to finish loading the 700 bales representing the first of more than 30 bargeloads contracted for shipment to Holland over the next few months. A new innovation in river transport, the LASH system cuts handling costs by eliminating several dockside loading and unloading procedures.

After being loaded in Greenville, the barge will be lifted aboard a mother ship capable of carrying 73 LASH barges. The mother ship crosses the Atlantic and unloads the barges at Rotterdam. Then the barges are placed in tows for delivery to their destinations. In the morning, Port Terminal stevedores were unloading paper rolls to be placed in storage for Greenville Mill. (UPD--Funeral services were planned here today for Mayor Thurman Henry, elected the city's top official last year after 10 years on the city commission. Henry, 61, died Wednesday in a Memphis, hospital following a lengthy illness.

He assumed duties as mayor last July. Mrs. Nancy Hay wood CLEVELAND--Funeral services for Mrs. Nancy Haywood, 56, of Cleveland, will oe 11 a.m. Sunday from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Shaw with burial in the church cemetery, Bea Century Funeral Home of Greenville in charge.

She died Sunday at Mound Bayou Community Hospital following a brief illness. She leaves her husband, Nathan Haywood; a son, Leroy Walker; a sister, Mrs. Beatrice Robinson, all of Cleveland; and a brother, D.C. Campbell of Deerfield, Fla. George McKlemurry MERIGOLD--George McKlemurry of Merigold died suddenly at his home this morning.

He had been an employe of Hiter Farms in Merigold for a number of years. Funeral services are tentatively set for 3 p.m. Friday. Fletcher Funeral Home of Cleveland has charge. Martha J.

Stancill DREW--Martha Jane Stancill, 61, Drew city clerk, died Wednesday at North Sunflower County Hospital at Ruleville. Funeral services were to be at 11 a.m. today at the Drew Methodist Church. The Rev. J.

C. Hubbard was to officiate. Burial was to be in Drew Cemetery. Thweatt-King Funeral Home of Cleveland had charge. Miss Stancill was born in Leflore County and moved to Drew at an early age.

She was a graduate of Drew High School and Delta State College. She had been city clerk in Drew for 19 years and was a member of the Drew Methodist Church and the Drew Business and Professional Woman's Club. She leaves six brothers, Thomas B. Stancill of Suitland, Clyde A. Stancill of Enid, Caswell P.

Stancill and Robert L. Stancill, both of Drew, Edward Stancill of Humboldt, and Pierson Slancill of Greenville, and three sisters, Mrs. C. J. Collier of Shaw, Mrs.

J. C. Haney of Drew and Mrs. A. E.

Wynn has opened the Christmas season with the lighting of the huge Ginkgo tree in the front yard of her home at 701 eenville, and this year is no exception. The 40- year-old is considered the largest Ginkgo tree in the United States, each year is adorned with blue lights in the shape of a large Christmas tree.

"I planted the tree myself," Mrs. Wynn said, "and I hope that it can continue to be a Christmas tree every year." C. Burnley's report today. A stolen car was found burning south of Greenville, a house burglary involved opened Christmas presents, a burglar took two television sets from a business but left them on a sidewalk in another part of town, and a woman had her purse stolen as she walked in back of the courthouse, the chief reported. (Greenville police were still investigating four store burglaries reported Wednesday morning.) The television sets, valued at $255 each, were recovered by Lls. Bill Horton and M.

R. Williams on AlexanderStreet about an hour and a half after Officer Jack Taylor discovered a burglary at the Electronic Workshop, 101 Miss, South early today. Taylor, after discovering the lower half of the firm's front glass door had been broken, called C. W. Sidney, the owner, and advised him of the situation, Burnley said.

After checking, Sidney reported the two portable color TV sets were missing. An area search by officers resulted in the location of the sets at 5:50 a.m. "They must have gotten too hot," Burnley said, "and the burglar just set them down and walked away." A 21-year-old Greenville man was admitted to General Hospital Wednesday night from injuries received at 7:16 p.m. when the motorcycle he was riding collided with an automobile at the intersection of U.

S. 82 and Golf St. John Critlcnden of Box 215, Greenville, was rushed to the hospital by Magnolia Ambulance Service. His wife said Crittenden would probably slay in the hospital several weeks. Greenville Police Chief W.

C. Burnley said Crittenden was making a left turn from the highway when he collided with an automobile driven by Charles Betterton, 22; of 712 Havana St. who was travelling East on the highway. Both men were charged with careless and reckless driving, Burnley said, by investigating officer Ottis McGough. Mrs.

Harry Love of 1724 Merigold St. reported her home had been broken into sometime between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Burnley said. She reported a $300 diamond dinner ring, a watch and missing from her home.

Burnley said the thief entered by removing a screen from a window on the south side of the home. "He went through all the drawers, cabinets and closets," Burnley said. The Christmas presents were taken from under the tree into another room and opened. But none of the presents were stolen, Burnley said. The family was not at home during the burglary.

The purse snatching, Burnley said, was reported by Mrs. Mary Milton of 318 Lake St. who said her purse, containing $3.50, was grabbed from her by ayoung (about 18) male as she walked home about 7 p.m. Wednesday. The incident happened in the lane behind the Washington County Courthouse.

The young purse snatcher was last seen running toward Washington Avenue. Rep. Rivers shows 'significant improvement' BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPD-- Doctors at University Hospital said Wednesday Rep. L.

Mendel Rivers, had shown "significant improvement" in his recovery from heart surgery but still remains "seriously ill." Former Met star Mimi Benzell is dead MANHASSET, N.Y. (UPD-- Mimi Benzell, who went from the Metropolitan Opera to her own radio show to a starring role in a long- running Broadway musical, died at North Shore Hospital Wednesday after a lengthy illness. She was 47. Miss Benzell joined the Met as a lyric coloratura while in her early 20s in 1945 and continued with the renowned opera company for five seasons. She began appearing in supper clubs in the late 1940s and in 1951 started a weekly radio program.

She debuted on Broadway in a featured role in "Milk and Honey," a 1961 musical set in Israel which starred Molly Picon and Robert Weede. Veteran character actor Charles Ruggles is dead SANTA MONICA, Calif. (UPD--Funeral services will be held Saturday for Charles Ruggles, the veteran character actor who almost always portrayed a wheezing, hesitant little man who was befuddled by the world. Ruggles, 84, one of the best film comedians of the 1930s and 40s, died Wednesday at St. John's Hospital here of cancer.

He had been under treatment at the hospital since September. Among his best known pictures were "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay," "Alice in Wonderland," "Charley's Aunt," "Gentlemen of the Press" and "Ruggles of Red Gap." IRS to send out 'Christmas presents' soon WASHINGTON (UPD --The Postal Service announced today it will soon begin delivering some Christmas mail from the government--75 million federal income tax forms for 1970.
