DolU Greenville, MiMiasippi Tuesday, Nov. 24,1970 I HEWED TO SHOW mu a ICE NOW SHOWING Archie Manning David Smith Jim Poole Worthy McClure Skip Jernigan State's Smith on team Archie, Sullivan make All-SEC By DAVID MOFFIT UPI Sports Writer ATLANTA (UPI)--Archie Manning or Pat Sullivan? Sportswriters and sportscasters, resolving one of the toughest decisions faced by all-star voters in this region, named Manning and Sullivan as co-quarterbacks of the 1970 All- Southeastern Conference football team announced today by United Press International. Some ballots insisted on both. Others had the name of one scratched out and the other written in. It's easy to understand the problem.

Manning is the Ole Miss senior who was the South's leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy until he broke his arm. Sullivan is the Auburn junior who leads the nation's major college players in total offense. While the vote for the All-SEC quarterback wound up in a tie, picking the running backs was much easier, Alabama's Johnny Musso and Tennessee's Curt Watson, both juniors, were runaway winners at those positions. The wide receiver posts went to Auburn's Terry Beasley and Mississippi State's David Smith with last year's All-SEC receivers, injured 1969 All-America Carlos Alvarez of Florida and Smith's teammate Sammy Milner, finishing far back in this year's vote. Rounding out the Rebel-dominated offensive unit were tight end Jim Poole of Ole Miss, tackles Worthy McC of Ole Miss and Tom Nash of Georgia, guards Chip Kell of Tennessee and Skip Jernigan of Ole Miss and center Tommy Lyons of Georgia.

Huntingdon, Tenn. Scwanee, Tenn. Crowley, La. has four and LSU has three--all on defense. Vanderbilt is the only member of the 10-team conference which failed to land in All-SEC berth.

Sullivan, who still has one more regular- season game to play, has passed and run for 2,522 yards and 23 touchdowns this'season. Manning, hurt midway through the Houston game but hopeful of returning for the Dec. 5 SEC title showdown at LSU, has 1,000 yards less than Sullivan but has accounted for 19 touchdowns. Musso goes into Alabama's finale with Auburn needing only 84 more yards to become the SEC's first rusher since 1963. Watson, hurt this season, has been well below last year's showing.

Smith, with 68 catches in 10 games, is sixth in the nation in pass receiving but although Beasley has caught only 43, he leads SEC receivers in yardage (920), average gain (21.4) and touchdowns (11). Beasley and Kell were the leading vote gainers on this year's All-SEC team, both getting 92.6 per cent of the vote for their respective positions. Musso had 88.8 per cent and Willingham 85.2. No sophomore was named to this year's team compared to four in 1969--Casanova, Watson, Alvarez gr.d Florida running back Tommy Durrance who drew only a handful of votes this time around. Strickland of Auburn; Backs--Larry Willingham of Auburn, Tim Priest and Bobby Majors of Tennessee and Tommy Casanova of LSU.

Kell, an All-America last year; Manning, last year's No. 2 All-America quarterback; and Watson are all repeaters from last year's All-SEC of tensive unit and Roller and Casanova are defensive repeaters. Ole Miss, with four men on the offensive unit, and Tennessee both have five representatives on the 23-man team, Auburn ASSIGN PITCHERS CHICAGO (UPI) --The Chicago White Sox Monday assigned four pitchers to their Tucson farm club to clear the roster for possible trades during the winter baseball meetings starting in Los Angeles next week. Sent to Tucson were relief pitchers Danny Murphy and Floyd Weaver and spot starters Jerry Crider and Barry Moore. Archie: BestQB prospect? ATLANTA (UPI) Archie Manning is rated by pro scouts as the best quarterback prospect in year's crop of college seniors.

That's the word from Tom Braatz, director of player personnel for the Atlanta Falcons, who says of the Ole Miss star: "Archie is everybody's favorite." In Braatz' opinion, there are two outstanding senior quarterbacks in the country this year-- Manning and Jim Plunkett of Stanford. "Each year there are two or three quar- lerbacks--if you are lucky enough to find that many --who stand out above the others," Braatz said. "Last year it was Terry Bradshaw (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Mike Phipps (Cleveland Browns), this year it's Manning and Plunkett." Braatz said that if he was pressed to make a comparison between this year's two standouts and those of last year, "I'd have to say Ole Miss accepting Gator orders UNIVERSITY (Special)--Ole Miss will begin accepting ticket orders to the 1971 Gator Bowl game immediately, John Reed Holley, business manager of athletics, announced Monday. The game, which matches the Rebels with Southeastern Conference member Auburn, will be played Jan. 2 in the 70,000 capacity Gator Bowl Stadium in Jacksonville.

The sale of the University of Mississippi's allotment of Gator Bowl tickets will be conducted by mail order only through Dec. 10. Thereafter, tickets can be purchased in person (over the counter), or by mail order as lime permits. The tickets are priced at each. All seats will be reserved, and there will be no limit to the number of tickets which can be purchased by an individual or firm.

Orders should be directed to the attention of Mr. Holley, P.O. Box 247, University, Mississippi 38677. Add fifty cents to each order to cover the cost of insurance and handling. Sale priorities established by the University Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics will follow the priorities established for the sale of rcgiilar-scafon Uckets.

They include: 1--Players, coaches and their families; 2--Other University students, and faculty and staff; 3--Season ticket purchasers Including active 'M' Club alumni and Loyalty Foundation and other active members of Die Alumni Association; 4--The general public. that Manning is very much like Phipps and Plunked is very much like Bradshaw." The Falcons' chief recruiter said that Manning and Plunkett "are both big strong boys--but Archie can do a few more things than the others. "Of course, I guess it depends upon the type of quarterback you are looking for," Braatz continued. "Archie doesn't drop back Ihe way most pro quarterbacks usually do. He prefers to throw on the run." How about Notre Dame's Joe Theismann, Braatz was asked.

"Theismann, like Ohio State's Rex Kern, doesn't appear to have the strong arm needed to be a pro quarterback," Braatz replied. "However, both are fine athletes and they might make it at another position." Braatz tabbed Ohio State's John Brockington as "the best of this year's crop of runners. "And Brockington's running mate, Leo Hayden, is also an outstanding runner as is Clarence Davis at Southern Cal and Don McCauley at North Carolina." Braatz said McCauley, who broke O.J. Simpson's singleseason rushing record by gaining 1,720 yards, is a lot like Ken Willard, a former University of North Carolina runner now with the San Francisco Forty Niners. "Neither one has a great deal of speed," said Braatz, "but they both get that yardage." Braatz tabbed J.D.

Hill of Arizona State as "(he top flanker in the country." But Braatz doubted that Tennessee's Chip Kell, expected to repeat as an All-America offensive lineman, or Georgia Tech's Rock Perdoni, an allstar candidate at defensive tackle, will make it in the National Football League. "They're both great football players--but they are simply too short. The league has outgrown 5-foot-ll football players and that's all there is to it." Falcons coach and general manager Norm Van Brocklin agreed with Braatz on the unlikelihood of short linemen making it in the NFL. Keep it working, at home!
