(UPI)- Safety Craig Burns' 90-yard punt return for a first quarter touchdown Saturday night sparked Louisiana State to a 38-7 conquest of Mississippi State and a tie for the Southeastern Conference lead. (UPI)-- Quarterback Shug Chumbler, ably taking over for the injured Archie Manning, hurled four touchdown passes Saturday to lead Mississippi to an easy 44-7 victory over Chattanooga in the Rebels' first test since losing Manning. Chumbler, a 205-pound junior who has seen only limited action as Manning's understudy the past two years, hit on scoring strikes of 34 yards and four yards to split end Floyd Franks, threw 17 yards to wingback Buddy Jones for another touchdown, and connected on a 42-yarder to tailback Bob Knight to complete the rout. Manning was hospitalized in Memphis after undergoing surgery for a broken forearm suffered last week against Houston.

The 13th ranked Rebels' other touchdowns came on an 86-yard kickoff return by wingback Vernon Studdard and a three-yard run by tailback Bob Knight. In addition, big Jim Poole kicked a 22-yard field goal for Ole Miss.

Only seconds later, Chattanooga's Florence raced 68 yards from scrimmage to give the Moccasins a 7-3 lead with 3:43 remaining in the opening period. But it was quickly erased with Studdard grabbing the ensuring kickoff at his own 14 and sped 86 yards for the Rebels' first touchdown.

After that, it was all Ole Miss. Chumbler passed to Franks for two touchdowns in the second quarter, climaxing drives of 71 and 72 yards, the Knight scored on a three-yard run to cap a 27-yard effort set up by a fumble recovery by the Rebels' Larry Torgenson. The Rebels, under the direction of acting coach Frank "Bruiser" Kinard, went 60 yards in five plays for another touchdown in the third quarter with Jones scoring on a 17- yard aerial from Chumbler. The final TD, with Chumbler going 42 yards to Knight, topped a 72-yard march. Head coach John Vaught of Ole Miss has missed the past three games since suffering a mild heart attack last month.
