The Reseda-Sylmar game will feature a battle between two teams that have won thus far with different techniques. Syhnar, on the other hand, used a powerful hitting attack in defeating Burbank, 6-4, and Chatsworth, 12-5. NorwalkSite of 3:30 p.m. Title Clash Newbury Park High School has a chance to bring the Valley its first GIF baseball championship today when the Panthers face Olympic League co-champion Valley Christian for the division title.

The game will be held at Cerritos College hi Norwalk, at 3:30 p.m. Coach jay Merrill's Panthers have already advancec farther than any other loca; baseball team with their 5-3 victory over Bishop Tuesday. Valley Christian advanced into the finals with a 10-3 win over Ontario. Merrill will probably go with ace Bob Quick today against the Crusaders. Quick has already helped to lead the Panthers past their last two playoff opponents, including a 2-0 shutout win over Paraclete.

He will be up against Valley Christian's all-league standout Bob Belong, who helped pace the Crusaders to an 8-2 league record. Valley Christian finished the Olympic League season in a tie for the top spot with St. Genericve. Both schools had 8-2 records in circuit play, but since the Crusaders beat the Valiants twice they were allowed to enter the GIF playoffs under a league rule. The Crusaders have a fine battery in pitcher DeJong and all-league catcher Calvin Spoolstra.

Newbury Park has done a remarkable job in advancing this far in the playoffs, although the Panthers had a close call against Bishop. The Panthers were sporting a 3-1 advantage before the Broncos came hack to tie the game in the seventh inning. But Newbury Park was able to push across a pair of markers in the top of the eighth to win, 5-3, and advance to the finals. The Panthers' only problem this year has been lack of experience, since the entire team is made up of underclassmen. Merrill has been getting some clutch hitting, as in the Bishop game, which has helped pull the team through.

The win against Bishop went to Ron Weyand, who came in after relief pitcher Dave Diaz got into trouble in the seventh frame. Weyand has also been one 0: the clubs most consistent hitters, along with freshman phenom Dave Abdalla. Kearns ran 9:20.2 in a.great race all the way around. This year's version of the race will feature two current high school greats. The contest will be part of the fourth annual Valley State Invitational scheduled Saturday, June 8, at Birmingham High School Stadium. The way things have shaped up another Brave star.

Gary Mazziotti. will be squared off against Mir a Costa's Tony Baker with the South Bay entry a slight favorite. The format of the meet is such that only the best of the graduating seniors in the San Fernando Valley will meet the top seniors from the South Bay. No longer will it be a team affair, but. rather an individual competition.

Of the six athletes entered in the two-mile Baker's time is the best at 9:13.4. Mazziotti, this year's Mid-Valley champion, has a best of 9:15.0, but when the two run on the same track with prestige at stake, nearly anything can be expected. In that light the other competitors conld bz heard from. Burbank's Mark Covert (9:26.8) and Birmingham's Gary Mills (9:48.0) will also represent the Valley contin- gent, while Dave Young West Torrance (9:33.6) ana Walt Kushko of San Pedro (9:34.0) will represent South Bay. Ellison's meet record, it can be safely said, is in jeopardy with the likes of this field especially the two featured runners.

Indications already point to a full house of major college representation to watch the City's 33 finest graduating senior footballers battle their counterparts high schools from Catholic in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. UCLA head coach Tommy Prothro personally watched last year's inaugural game, flanked by several members of his staff, while TJSC had a three-man delegation in the press box. The Bmtns and Trojans players in this yearns game who are committed to enroll at their respective universities, thanks to the "letter of intent" frhich the conference uses to hind prospective a i to member schools. And botfi local collegiate football powers are likely tc be looking at still other pros pects in pre-game practic and the contest itself. Similarly, California, Stan ford, Washington, Washington State, Oregon, and Oregon State all have an interest in sending representation to thi training camps and the Coliseum to (1) protect themselves on players they have alreadj contacted and (2) hopeft uncover a player overlooked.

UCLA has bagged tackle Jim Berg from Mater Dei, A13 CIF guard John Wargo from St. Paul, AU-CIF end Blaise Evers from Servite, and All CIF center Pat Keaiy, Bishop Montgomery, all of whom -will be on the Catiholic all-stars plus All-City halfback Bon Carver. Two new standards are virtually assured, since competition in hoth the 440 and mile relays is on a first-year basis. The CIF sections abandoned the 880 relay this year in preference of the two other races.

Other marks that may be threatened include the 440-yard dash, the two-mile and the high jump. Centennial, expected to make a runaway of the team title, is involved in threats on four of the marks. The Apaches are favored in both relays, with Edesel Garrison favored in the 440 and jumper Reynaldo Brown the man to beat in the high jump. Garrison, "who anchors the relay team is capable of snapping Jerry White's record of 46.7, as well as Ulis Williams' national mark of 46.1. Brown is almost certain to exceed 6 ft.

The super-duper sophomore, of course, Is Steve Hug and he'll be the feature in a meet scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. If he can ecore enough points, the 5 ft. 3 in. phenom will become the first gymnast ever to win a team title virtually by himself. He captured six first places and scored 30 of his team's 31 points In the West Valley League finals.

Not bad for a team that was shut out in circuit action only one year earlier. In the city semi-final meet at Franklin last week, he "slipped" just a little, winning four events, tying for first place in another and placing sixth in still another. Teammate Ron Varga added a second place in the rings and could add to Hug's total tonight. "He's the most fantastic thing this country has had!" enthuses Monroe coach Les Sasvary, former Hungarian national team member and Olympian. And Jack Beckner, three-time U.S.

Olympic team member who is coaching at Eagle Rock, agrees. So are many officials, coaches, and former gymnastics greats. Hug joins a long line of top gymnastic talent that has been produced in the San Fernando Valley and he may already be the best of all them. That's quite a statement when talking of names like Dave Thor, Rich Field, Jack and Dick Beckner, Lonnie Kapp, Terry Higgins, Paul Davis, Bob and G-ary Diamond, Richard Grigsby and Rusty Rock.
